The proposed southside master plan for Fayetteville is back at the drawing board, and a whole new team of artists is elbowing its way to the canvas.

Absentee ballots delayed

Fayette County absentee ballots, along with many across the state, have been delayed. Although all other statewide election votes will be cast using the new electronic voting units, absentee ballots will be paper as in the past. Per the Secretary of State Press Office representative, Cara Hodgson, redistricting, the pushed-back election dates and two legislative recounts have resulted in the delays. Georgia Election Code states that absentee ballots must be available 45 days prior to the election. Counties should have had the completed ballots on September 21st to be in compliance. However, many, like Fayette County, did not receive ballot proofs until this week. Once received the County has 24-hours to review and send to the printer if correct.

North Fayette teacher headed to Japan

When the opportunity knocked, Chrishirella Warthen of North Fayette Elementary answered and now she is among a select group of educators nationwide who will travel to Japan to learn more about the country's culture and customs.

GAE endorses Cox

State Rep. Kathy Cox of Peachtree City has been endorsed by the Georgia Association of Educators in her bid to become Georgia's next state school superintendent.

Rezoning suit between developer, Fayette County nears trial date

If Pathway Communities has its way, a Superior Court judge will overturn the Fayette County Commission's rezoning of its 364-acre parcel just north of Peachtree City on the westbound side of Ga. Highway 74.

Tyrone getting hot over lack of response to fire impact fee improvement request

Last year Tyrone collected $100,000 in fire impact fees from builders but was told by the county that they wouldn't see any improvements funded with the money raised for over 10 years. Several weeks ago the Tyrone town council had town manager Barry Amos draft a letter to the county requesting the county re-examine the capital improvement projects that would be funded by the fire impact fees. They have yet to receive a response from the county.

Fayette NAACP banquet Oct. 26

The Fayette County NAACP is preparing for its Freedom Fund Banquet, set for Oct. 26 at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center in Peachtree City. Alonzo Hall, president and CEO of International Agile Manufacturing in Statesboro, is the keynote speaker.

Dedication ceremony Oct. 13 for Minter school

Fayette Shriners pledge towards hospitals

The Fayette Shrine Club, located on Ellis Road in north Fayette County, is the home of 115 local members. They purchased a former daycare building in 1994 and are quick to participate in local community affairs as well those overseen by the Yaarab Shrine center in Atlanta.

Fayette County High School Homecoming

Fayette County High School will start its homecoming celebration Thursday with a parade on Tiger Trail at 6 p.m. with floats made by the classes and various clubs. As the parade ends at 7 p.m., the floats will proceed to Tiger Stadium for the first annual Junior-Senior Tiger Powder Puff game. Admission is $1.

Panthers and Patriots stay perfect in the region

The high school football season is nearly halfway over and it is getting very exciting. Starr's Mill faced Lovejoy in a Region 4-AAAAA showdown last Friday, made an incredible comeback and won, 35-34. The Panthers now sit atop the region standings with Newnan, whom they will face on Oct. 18 at home.

Local cross country teams run at Alexander Invitational

The cross-country season took several local teams to the Alexander Invitational at the McIntosh Reserves over the weekend. In the Girls Champion Division Starr's Mill placed 15th and Sandy Creek placed 17th while in the Girls Invitational Division Landmark Christian placed fifth and Fayette County placed ninth. The local boys teams ran in the Champion Division. Starr's Mill placed 10th, Landmark Christian placed 13th, Fayette County placed 19th and Sandy Creek placed 25th.

Lake Spivey defeats River's Edge in inaugural tournament

Amateur golfers from Lake Spivey Golf Club in Jonesboro edged members of River's Edge Golf Club near Fayetteville in the first annual "Hamilton Cup" staged at River's Edge on the weekend of Sept. 28-29.

PTC Flash competes in Etowah Meet

28 Flash members traveled to Etowah this past Sunday for a cross country meet. The eight and under girls again took first place, even without their top runner who is out with a minor injury. Although there were not enough runners to secure a first place for the 12 girls, the showing was quite strong with our only three runners finishing in three of the top six spots. Individual result are as follows:

Joey Clanton Wins 2002 ASA Championship

Hello race fans! This past Sunday, at Winchester Speedway in Winchester, Indiana, Steve Dale Motorsports won the 2002 American Speed Association (ASA) National Championship. It is the first time in the history of the ASA series a Georgia team has won the title.

Starr's Mill presents Wilder's classic "Our Town"

Thornton Wilder's "Our Town" chronicles life in a small town in America at the dawn of the 20th century. What has made the show such an enduring success is that the show illustrates the eternal truths of human existence. "Our Town" enjoyed critical success, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and is still popular with audiences today. Starr's Mill High School will present "Our Town" on Thursday, Oct. 10 and Saturday, Oct. 12.

FCFT presents 'The Enchantment of Beauty and the Beast'

The story of Beauty and the Beast is one of the more popular fairy tales of all time. Teaching the lesson that the only true beauty is inner beauty, Beauty and the Beast has been adapted as a musical, an animated classic, a television show and more. Fayette Coweta Family Theatre is putting their spin on the tale with their production of "The Enchantment of Beauty and the Beast."

Westville offers a working 1850 Harvest Festival

There have been a lot of fall festivals around the area over the last few weekends and now Westville, Georgia's working 1850 town, will show visitors how people in the mid 19th century celebrated a harvest festival.

Fiesta on the Plaza' in PTC this Saturday

During the month of October the Peachtree City Library will feature displays celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The library will also host its second "Fiesta on the Plaza" in front of City Hall on Saturday, October 12, 2002, from 2 ­ 5:30 p.m.

Next week is Teen Read Week

The Peachtree City Library will celebrate Teen Read Week, Oct. 13-19. There will be several activities during the week for both teens and children. There will be an art display from students of the local high schools running through Oct. 31. A reception will be held Monday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.

Spiritual maturity is key to religious differences

In years past, it was a rather common practice to find one spouse worshipping Sunday morning at the Baptist church while the other spouse was found at the Methodist church. Usually, however, they attended the same restaurant afterwards. No one thought it heresy and apparently marriages did not seem to suffer the worse because of attending different watering holes though the water ran more freely at the Baptist church.

Local ministry rebuilds hopes, dreams and homes one 'square foot' at a time

The Fayette County area has its own little version of Habitat for Humanity but it does more than just build houses for the needy.

Nicaraguan choir returns to St. Gabriel's

The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel in Fayetteville will host a return visit by the Getsemani Choir, a boys' choir from Nicaragua, Saturday, Oct. 12. The performance of native folk songs and dances will follow a Saturday evening Mass and a spaghetti dinner hosted by the Knights of Columbus. The dinner will get underway at 6:30 p.m.

Myron Taylor will speak at Tyrone Christian Church

Dr. Myron Taylor, retired minister of Westwood Hills Christian Church in Los Angeles, will be the guest speaker at the First Christian Church of Tyrone Sunday, Oct. 13 through Wednesday, Oct. 16. The Sunday morning service begins at 10:30 a.m. and evening services Sunday through Wednesday will begin at 7 p.m.

Braelinn Baptist relocates new Service Center

Braelinn Community Services, Inc., a ministry of the Braelinn Baptist Church in Peachtree City, will open its new service center for operations Thursday, Oct. 24, at 382 Senoia Rd. in Tyrone. The "official" grand opening is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 15.

Bethany UMC plans Missions Fair Oct. 12

Bethany United Methodist Church in north Fayette County will have a Missions Fair Saturday, Oct. 12, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The fair will feature gifts and handcrafted items made by skilled artisans in 30 Third World countries.

Flat Rock A.M.E. plans Women's Day activities this Sunday

Needed: Kirkley Rd. red light

I am writing this letter to you about how I think we should consider putting a stop light on Ga. Highway 74 near the entrance to Kirkley Road. There are so many cars that fly through that area in the morning and it is almost impossible to get across there. I believe that with your help we can solve that problem very easily and help a lot more students to get to school on time every morning.
