Fayette NAACP banquet Oct. 26
The Fayette County NAACP is preparing for its Freedom Fund Banquet, set for Oct. 26 at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center in Peachtree City. Alonzo Hall, president and CEO of International Agile Manufacturing in Statesboro, is the keynote speaker. Hall, a native of Portal, Ga., was employed with General Motors for more than 20 years before purchasing an ailing foundry near his hometown and kept it from being closed down, saving 125 jobs. The facility has produced and marketed a World Trade Center commemorative medallion made of steel recovered from the World Trade Center site. WGCL television news anchor Calvin Hughes is the honorary co-chairman of the fifth annual Freedom Fund Banquet, and WXIA television news anchor Tiffany Cochran is mistress of ceremonies. Awards will be presented to local individuals for outstanding community service and/or distinguished achievement. The program is scheduled to include a social hour from 6-7 p.m., followed by dinner, the speaker's address, entertainment, and the awards ceremony. Call 770-460-9934 for ticket information. The Fayette NAACP now holds its regular monthly meeting at the Flat Rock A.M.E. Church every second Saturday. All members, old and new, are encouraged to attend.
