Nicaraguan choir returns to St. Gabriel's

The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel in Fayetteville will host a return visit by the Getsemani Choir, a boys' choir from Nicaragua, Saturday, Oct. 12. The performance of native folk songs and dances will follow a Saturday evening Mass and a spaghetti dinner hosted by the Knights of Columbus. The dinner will get underway at 6:30 p.m.

The choir was a big hit with parishioners when it performed at St. Gabriel last fall. One parishioner commented, "After seeing them last year, I wouldn't miss a chance to see them again."

The choir is sponsored by Amigos for Christ, a group organized in 1999 by a youth group from Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Norcross. Amigos for Christ is now recognized as a nonprofit charity by the federal government. All contributions are tax deductible and records show that the group uses more than 97 percent of its money for projects.

Since its founding, Amigos for Christ has built schools, a health clinic, housing, businesses and churches in an area that has been the site of several natural disasters and a civil war. Goals for this year include support for an elementary school, a home and school for the blind, a technical school, a seminary and a church, along with providing everyday necessities in the area in which they live.

The performance at St. Gabriel's is free, but donations are accepted. All proceeds from the spaghetti dinner will be donated to the choir to fund its projects.

For more information on the performance, directions to the church, or the evening's other activities, call St. Gabriel's parish office, 770-461-0492. The church is on Antioch Rd. just off Ga. Hwy. 92 South.
