Heavy rains, blocked storm drains add up to flood waters in Fville

Several Fayetteville homes and an apartment complex were damaged by flood waters during torrential rains that began late Monday night.

The Fayetteville Fire Department responded by sending out crews to help remove debris that clogged storm drains in the affected areas, which included Hightower Apartments, said Fire Chief Alan Jones.

"We got such a volume of rain that it washed debris on top of the storm drain," Jones said. "Really, all we could do was try to keep the storm drain clear until the rain subsided."

Fire crews were also dispatched to two residences, one on Eastfield Circle and the other on Garden Court, for assistance during the heavy rains, Jones said.

The department's volunteer force helped respond to the calls, Jones said. After the first storm front went through, crews braced for a second storm front that "thankfully" never materialized, Jones said.

"We just got a lot of rain in a short period of time," Jones said.
