Lake Spivey defeats River's Edge in inaugural tournament

Amateur golfers from Lake Spivey Golf Club in Jonesboro edged members of River's Edge Golf Club near Fayetteville in the first annual "Hamilton Cup" staged at River's Edge on the weekend of Sept. 28-29.

The two-day event included six "four ball matches" on Saturday morning, followed by six "alternate shot" matches in the afternoon. Similar to the Ryder Cup format, 12 individual "match play" rounds were completed on Sunday.

River's Edge took the early lead with a 4-2 advantage in the four ball matches, but Lake Spivey rebounded to claim the overall lead at the end of the first day by winning four and a half of the six points in the afternoon alternate shot competition. Each team then won six individual matches on Sunday, leaving Lake Spivey with a slim 12.5-11.5 edge in the inaugural event.

Lake Spivey winners on Sunday included Keith Harris over Freddie Schmid (4 and 3), Brian Stanga over Jerry Carter (7 and 5), Tim Kelley over Daryl Knox (2 up), Harry Jansak over Mark Cauley (2 and 1), Jim Craig over Allen Pickel (3 and 2) and Steve Meyers over Trey Houston (3 and 2).

River's Edge winners on the final day were Mike Hood over Robbie Hill (2 and 1), Danny Hope over Ric Latarski (8 and 7), Randy McDonald over Jerry Hallford (2 and 1), Darrell Hatfield over Frank Dilley (3 and 1), Jay Burns over Vic Echevarria (3 and 2), and Dale Bone over Don McGinnis (3 and 2).

Qualifying tournaments took place at both clubs to determine the 12 participants. Lake Spivey golfers will defend their title when play shifts to their home course next year.
