St. Valentine understood what love was all about
By REV. JOHN HATCHER
Religion Columnist

For the most part, we Protestants and whatever have the Catholics to thank for Valentine's Day, so it seems. It goes like this: In 270 A.D. Emperor Claudius issued an edict forbidding marriage because he believed married men made poor soldiers, not wanting to leave their families to go to battle. Valentine, bishop of Interamna, disagreed with the emperor and invited young lovers to come to him in secret to be married. When Claudius found that Valentine was performing secret marriage ceremonies, he was incensed. He had Valentine arrested and brought before him. When Valentine refused to change his views and renounce Christianity, he was put in prison to await execution. In February of 270, Valentine was clubbed, stoned, and then beheaded.

Our water is safe, but spill shows reporting system needs improvement
By SALLIE SATTERTHWAITE
sallies@juno.com

Memo to lawyers: What part of 'secret' do you not get?

Thank you for keeping us taxpayers up to date on these secret meetings. Oh, wait a moment, memo to Lindsey and Davenport: SECRET, SECRET, SECRET, SECRET ... SECRET! Now, what part of "secret" do you not understand? I only wish you two were elected so I could do all in my power to encourage others to unelect you.

Give King his due, but discover all the facts

Most responses to Letters to the Editor don't require follow-up, but the vitriolic, personal attacks on me by Messrs. Lewis and Scott deserve answering.

Dr. King not only talked the dream; he walked it

To classify Victoria Wanzer's comments as ignorant and racist would serve to add dignity to her remarks, in that ignorance and racism are correctable conditions if one actively chooses to eradicate these afflictions by becoming informed. Additionally, to categorize her remarks as an attempt to defame Dr. King's character would only serve to add a minuscule amount of validity to her statements, because contrary to her beliefs, Dr. King did not seek fame in his noble and unselfish works for the peaceful existence of humankind.

Ted Turner has a few causes beyond buffalos

Thanks should go to Susan Bertram whose letter to the editor published Jan. 23 alerted Peachtree City residents to the impending opening of Ted's Montana Grill. In addition to the rip-off of the taxpayers for various federal agricultural subsidies, Turner is up to his neck in other hypocritical activities.

Bills create special class: victims vs. rest of us

A few days ago President Bush signed into law "Victims of Terrorism Tax Relief Act" (HR 2884). He has given the survivors of Sept. 11, Oklahoma and the military a special status in this country. He, by not vetoing that bill, is creating two distinct classes of people: Those that were personally affected by those acts and the rest of us.
