This year's Anglican-Lutheran Ash Wednesday service marks the 18th anniversary of combined worship by two Peachtree City congregations.

St. Andrew's-in-the-Pines Episcopal Church and Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran will gather for worship this evening at 7 p.m. at St. Andrew's, 316 Peachtree Pkwy. North. The service will include the imposition of ashes in the form of a cross on each worshipper's forehead an ancient Christian symbol of mortality and the celebration of Holy Communion.

Christians throughout the world set aside the 40 days before Easter for meditation and repentance. Churches often forego flowers, emphasizing prayer and self-denial in solemn gratitude for Christ's sacrifice on Good Friday.

The Rev. Dan Brigham, rector of St. Andrew's, will celebrate Mass. The Rev. John Weber, senior pastor of Christ our Shepherd, will preach.

The Rev. Frank Larisey and the Rev. Miriam Beecher will participate in the imposition of ashes.

The two congregations' choirs will provide special music under the direction of Leslie Boyette, choirmaster and organist at St. Andrew's.

Following worship, there will be a reception in the parish hall. A nursery will be available during the service.

The Episcopalians also observe Ash Wednesday as part of their regular 6 a.m. and noon worship services. Christ Our Shepherd too will offer an Ash Wednesday service at noon in their sanctuary at 101 Peachtree Pkwy. North.

The community is welcome at all services. For further information, St. Andrew's number is 770-487-8415; Christ our Shepherd's is 770-487-8717.
