BOYLAN
The regular season of high school basketball ended on Friday night and the region tournaments began on Monday. The local teams are hoping to do well enough to advance to the state tournaments, which start next week. Few of the local teams ended the regular season on a strong note. In fact, Sandy Creek's boys and Fayette County's girls were the only local teams to end the season with a win. Fayette County faced Jonesboro on Friday night. The girls started off slowly and trailed Lovejoy 17-10 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Tigers took a two point lead at the half and then began to control the rest of the game with excellent shooting. They won 59-45. The boys went back and forth with the Cardinals on Friday. They were deadlocked at 42 points a piece at the half but Jonesboro turned it on in the second half,, winning 89-76. The Lady Tigers opened the region tournament with a 78-56 loss to Jonesboro on Monday, while the boys were scheduled to meet Newnan last night. McIntosh faced Lovejoy on Friday night and saw both the boys and girls lose. The boys fell 75-44, while the girls were defeated 44-30. Dexter Manley was the leading scorer for the boys with 16 points while Patrick McDonough added nine points. The Lady Chiefs faced Eagle's Landing on Monday evening and the boys were scheduled to meet Riverdale yesterday. Sandy Creek's boys defeated Jones County 66-53 on Friday, while the Lady Patriots lost 37-36. The boys lead 35-38 at the half and maintained control of the game in the second half. William Belton was the leading scorer with 28 points and Corey Adams contributed 19 points. The Patriots entered the region 4-AAAA tournament as the number two seed. They were scheduled to meet Union Grove last night, while the girls will face Woodward Academy at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Sandy Creek High School. Starr's Mill faced East Coweta on Friday. The Lady Panthers had a 29-26 lead at the half but could not stop the Lady Indian's charged up offensive attack in the second half and lost 64-52. Ashley Marine was Starr's Mill leading scorer with 16 points while Erin Ricker added 14 points. The boys were down 29-13 at the end of the first quarter after the Indians came out and shot the lights out. By the beginning of the fourth quarter the lead was 65-50 and the Indians cruised to a 92-66 win. Che Brewer led the Panthers with 22 points, while Gary Kubik added 14 points. The Lady Panthers opened the region tournament with a 54-53 loss to North Clayton on Monday. The boys were scheduled to meet Morrow last night.
