Last Wednesday was National Signing Day, a day when the top football recruits from all around the nation sign with colleges vowing to attend the school and play football there. Fayette County had a number of their high school athletes sign with colleges.

Fayette County high School had kicker Jon Deraney sign with NC State and receiver Tyler Watts sign with Hardin University. Deraney chose NC State because there is a chance he will be able to play right away but also because they will be able to offer him the educational program he wants.

"NC State has the fourth best Engineering school in the country,' said Deraney, who wishes to major in Aerospace and mechanical Engineering. "Plus, I have a chance to start next year."

Watts believes he will be redshirted his first year at Harding University, which is located in Searcy, Ark., but he is excited to be furthering his football career. Watts, who averaged over 12 yards per catch this season, plans to major in aviation administration.

Deraney and Watts have known each other since they were in the first grade together at East Fayette Elementary School. Both players will remember the friendships forged on the football field as Fayette County Tigers.

Other local football players that signed with colleges last Wednesday were Sandy Creek's Kedric Golston, Riley Swanson and Kelvin German and Starr's Mill's Erik Advincula, Darrell Burston and Jason Earwood.

Golston, one of the top defensive recruits in the nation, signed with the University of Georgia, while Swanson signed with Wake Forest and German signed with Middle Tennessee State University. Advincula will play at Valdosta State University, while Burston will attend Florida State University and Earwood will go to Georgia Southern University.
