St. Gabriel's sets Ash Wednesday events The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel in Fayetteville will join Christians around the world this week as Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Lenten season. Mass will be celebrated at St. Gabriel's at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, followed by the distribution of ashes. A special Mass for the children is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and another Mass, with distribution of ashes, will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Fr. Jimmy Adams, pastor of St. Gabriel's, will be the celebrant at each of the Masses. Ash Wednesday Masses signal the beginning of Lent, which lasts 40 days and concludes with Easter week services. "Placing ashes on our foreheads reminds us of the finiteness of our existence," said Deacon Al McHugh of St. Gabriel's. "Our body and soul will be reunited at the last judgement. The ashes used in the Mass are from palms that were blessed on Palm Sunday the previous year. Some churches use olive branches if they are available." As the lenten season continues, the Stations of the Cross will be prayed each Friday beginning at 7 p.m. The stations symbolize the "Via Delarosa," the journey Jesus took to Calvary on Good Friday prior to His crucifixion. In addition to the regular evening events, the church's Life Teen group will reenact special "living" stations. The teens will perform for the religious education students on March 6 at 6:30 p.m., and for the congregation on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m. The Catholic Church of St. Gabriel is at 152 Antioch Rd., just south of the intersection of Antioch and Ga. Hwy. 92 South. For directions or further information, call the church office, 770-461-0492. |
