L.H. RainesL. H. "Pat" Raines, 90, Peachtree City, died Sept. 28, 2008. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kati Ross. He served as a pilot in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II, flying both B-25s and B-24s. He is credited with flying 65 combat missions in the Southwest Pacific combat zone. After release from active duty in 1945 he served in the United States Air Force Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was employed by the Army Corps of Engineers in Washington D.C. Originally from Ashburn, Ga., he was a graduate of Georgia Tech, receiving a B.S. in civil engineering, class of 1948. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Peachtree City, and involved in many civic endeavors. Memorial services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with interment at Andersonville National Cemetery, Andersonville, Ga. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Janie Raines, Peachtree City; children, Ann Baboylan, Vinings, and sons Scott and Andres, David A. and Cathie Raines, Marietta, and their children, Ben Murray, Hillary and Cody Raines, Lee Raines and his partner, Drew De Los Reyes, New York City, Clark Raines and daughter, Meredith, Tyrone, and Susan Ross, Atlanta. Jospeh PelkeyJoseph Pelkey, 82, Peachtree City, died Sept. 18. 2008. He was born Aug. 17, 1926 in Providence, R.I. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Elizabeth Pelkey, and his wife of 53 years, Anne Pelkey. Philip Roy MewbournePhilip Roy Mewbourne, 56, Peachtree City, died Oct. 28, 2008. He was born Jan. 20, 1952 in Columbus, Ga. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Brown "Bodie" Mewbourne, and a sister, Jacquelyn Rose. He lived most of his life in Clayton County, was graduated from Forest Park High School, and attended Clayton Junior College. He worked for the Clayton County Water Authority for 33 years. After retiring he went on a mission field trip to Costa Rica, and Tanzania. He befriended a pastor in Tanzania, Mike Akyoo. He also enjoyed fishing and camping trips. Services were at Grace Evangelical Church, Fayetteville with Mark Conklin presiding. Survivors include his wife, Cynthia I. Mewbourne, Peachtree City; a son Mike Mewbourne, Atlanta; daughters, Jessica White, Loganville, and Monica Mewbourne, San Antonio; a granddaughter, Kyla White; his mother, Tommie Mewbourne; a brother, Keith Mewbourne, Cartersville; and a sister, Kay Brookshire, Atlanta. Interment was at Hope Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery in Sharpsburg. Gladys Louella MannGladys Louella Mann, 83, Tyrone, died Oct. 2, 2008. She was born in 1925 in Fayette County, the daughter of Luther A. and S. L. Brown Matthews. She was an avid gardener, and a wonderful cook. She was an active member of the Tyrone First Baptist Church where she set a Christian example for several generations of members and her family. Timothy L. AllenTimothy L. "Tim" Allen, 49, Newnan, died Oct. 8. 2008. He was born Sept. 2, 1959 in LaGrange. He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Wayne Allen, and a sister, Deborah Allen Haynes. Bessie Mae TaylorBessie Mae "Doodle" Taylor, 93, Newnan, died Oct. 10, 2008. She was born July 19, 1915 in Carroll County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah Morgan and Willie Garner Kee, her husband, Huel Taylor, and sons, Gary Taylor, Royce Taylor, and Donny Taylor. She was a longtime member of Mills Chapel Baptist Church. Cecil Thompson BrimerCecil Thompson Brimer, 91, Newnan, died Oct. 15, 2008. John Evans officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery. Frances PrestageFrances Prestage, 62, Fayetteville, died Oct. 11,2008. She was born June 10, 1946 in Atlanta and grew up in Hapeville. She was graduated from Hapeville High School in 1964. She was a member of Fayetteville Christian Church and taught Sunday School for a number of years. She was retired from Wachovia Bank in 2007 with 20 years of service. James Wilford Cook SrJames Wilford Cook Sr., 86, Fayetteville, died Oct. 13, 2008. He was a member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church in Forest Park. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. Services were at the Jones Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Candy Thacker officiating. Interment was at Sherwood Memorial Park, Jonesboro. Henry H. KeithHenry H. Keith, 93, Fayetteville, died Oct. 14, 2008. He was born Dec. 4, 1914 in Newnan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard M. and Daisy Reese Keith, and brothers, H. M. Keith Jr., and Thomas Edgar Keith. He was retired from the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Co., with 47 years of service. He was a 72-year member of the Masonic Lodge of Georgia, twice past master of John Rosier Lodge F&AM #608 in Atlanta, and a current and active member of Fayetteville Masonic Lodge F&AM #711. He was a member of Sylvan Hills Baptist Church for 76 years and an active member of McDonough Road Baptist Church, Fayetteville. Laura GriffiesLaura Griffies, 91, Fayetteville, died Oct. 15, 2008. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judith L. Melton. Memorial services were at the Carl J. Marcella C. WalkerMarcella C. "Marcy" Walker 55, Fayetteville, died Oct. 15, 2008. She had fought a courageous 14 month battle with leukemia. She was an active member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church, and was known for her dedication, enthusiasm and generosity. She had been a Girl Scout troop leader, a flight attendant for Eastern Air Lines, a graphic designer for Frank Cawood and Associates, an assistant teacher at East Fayette Elementary and most recently as a bus driver for the Fayette County Board of Education. Carolyn RinckCarolyn Rinck, 63, Fayetteville, died Oct. 15, 2008. She was born April 1, 1945 in Yonkers, N.Y. and was retired from the City of New Rochelle as a personnel administrator. She moved to Fayetteville in 1992 with her husband, who worked for Delta Airlines. She was the bookkeeper for St. Gabriel Catholic Church for 15 years and was the town clerk of Woolsey. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus. George M. BrooksGeorge M. Brooks, Fayetteville, died Oct. 19, 2008. Services are this morning at 11 a.m. at the Parrott Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Eleanor Lynne DowningEleanor Lynne Downing, 70, Palmetto, died Sept. 26,2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Carl Downing. Memorial services were at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Fayetteville, with Pastor Justin Kollmeyer officiating. Francis Earl "Frank" BezenahFrancis Earl "Frank" Bezenah, Newnan, died Sept. 26, 2008. He was born on Jan. 15, 1928 in Detroit, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Earl and Winifred Cornelia Brown Bezenah, and a sister, Betty Howard. He had served for three years each in the United States Army and the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He found great joy in collecting clocks, southern pottery, pocket knives and antiques. He was a master clock maker and repairman and was appreciated the trust placed in him by those giving him their treasured time pieces to repair. Geraldine "Jerri" Banks WaitsGeraldine "Jerri" Banks Waits, 77, Palmetto, formerly of Brooks and East Point, died Oct. 5, 2008. She was born and raised in Lineville, Ala. She was preceded in death by husbands, Gene Privett and Junior Banks. She was a very active person who enjoyed playing softball, bowling and gardening, often winning "Yard of the Month." She suffered stroke in 1993. She loved animals and attending church at Fairview Baptist Church. Juanita YoungbloodJuanita Youngblood died Oct. 5, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Curtis Youngblood. She was a member of Harp’s Crossing Baptist Church. Howard Alfred ElliottHoward Alfred Elliott, 77, Fayetteville, died Oct. 3, 2008. As a young man, he was a skilled diver. He gave up an chance as an Olympic athlete to enter military service. |
