E.E. “Gene" Young, 86, died April 13, 2008. He was born Oct. 25, 1921. He had joined the United States Army in 1938 and transferred to the Army Air Corps in 1940.

Donna Ann Jew

Donna Ann Jew, Peachtree City, died April 7, 2008. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and had been employed with Delta Airlines as a flight attendant scheduler.

Dorothy Anne Hester Tripp

Dorothy Anne Hester Tripp, 79, Morro Bay, Calif., formerly of Fayetteville, died Feb. 13, 2008. She was born in 1929 in Bogart, Ga., one of eight children.

Clyde R. Tillison

Clyde R. Tillison, Peachtree City, died April 4, 2008. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne S. Tillison. There were no local services. J.; great-grandchildren, Kimberlie Burkett, Peachtree City, Mackenzie Riley, Smyrna, and Connor Tillison, Senoia; and a brother, Donald and Nancy Tillison, Mechanicsburg, Pa.

Madge Holmes

Madge Holmes, 88, Newnan, died April 10, 2008. She was born May 18, 1919 in Coweta County. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Pendleton and Nora Mayes Hood Holmes, and sisters, Margaret Keith, Wilnora Holmes, and Joyce Holmes. She was member of Newnan First United Methodist Church, and was an administrative assistant at the Georgia Department of Labor. Graveside services were at Oak Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. Med Roach officiating. Survivors include a nephew, William F. Keith; and nieces, Susan Glover and Jane Decker. Cheryl Williams Baxter

Cheryl Williams Baxter, 56, Newnan, died April 10, 2008. She was born Aug. 16, 1951 in Alameda, Calif., daughter of the late David Samuel and Lorry Newman Williams. She taught art at Elm Street Elementary School in Newnan for 15 years before retiring in 2007. Memorial services were at McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Harry Barrow officiating. Survivors include her husband, Chuck Baxter, Newnan; a daughter, Lauren Baxter, Newnan; and a sister, Valerie Frescura, Alameda, Calif.

Billy Joe "Bill" McWaters

Billy Joe "Bill" McWaters, 72, died April 14, 2008. He was born in Coweta County, son of the late Robert and Sara Lee Bell McWaters. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Thomas Ware McWaters, Robert Wayne McWaters, and sisters, Runelle McWaters McKoy, and Frances McWaters Webb. He grew up in the Welcome community and attended Western School. He later attended West Georgia College and served in the National Guard for eight years. Following a successful career in banking, he retired in 1998 and enjoyed his years of good times with family and friends. He was a lifetime member of the Benevolent Order of the Elks. Memorial services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Harry Barrow officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan.

Edna F. McLaughlin West

Edna F. McLaughlin West, 86, Sharpsburg, died April 14, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, James J. McLaughlin Sr. Services were at Carmichael-Hemperley chapel with interment at the Long island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, Long Island, N.Y. Survivors include sons, James J. McLaughlin Jr., and Richard J. and Sally McLaughlin, all of Hampton; a daughter, Joan and Glenn Marshall, Sharpsburg; nine grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.

Dr. Byron F. Harper Jr.

Byron F. Harper, Jr., M. D., 85, was called home to be with the Lord on April 12, 2008, after many years of faithful service to this family, his church, and his community.

Ruby Davis Betsill

Ruby, "Gran-Ruby" Davis Betsill, 100, Fayetteville, died April 12, 2008. She was born Jan. 1, 1908, daughter of Oscar Strickland and Mary Malitta Hill Davis.

Alton J. Wallace, 87, Peachtree City, died April 2, 2008. He was born May 22, 1920 in Plantsville, Conn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Mary Wallace, and his wife, Virginia Walker Wallace.

Marjorie Brook Fairchild

Marjorie Brook Fairchild, 84, Brooks, formerly of College Park, died March 28, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Walter H.

Edward Hill

Edward Hill, 66, Newnan, died March 28, 2008. He was born Feb. 13, 1942 in Coweta County. He was preceded in death by his parents, James R. and Lillie B. Hill, his wife, Annie Pearl Hill, who died eight years ago, and brothers, J. W. Hill, James L. Hill Jr., Milton Hill, and Roosevelt Hill. He was retired from the William L. Bonnell Company after 30 years of service, many of those in management. He was a loving and caring father and teacher, and a man of multiple talents.

J. B. Wortham

J. B. Wortham, 90, Newnan, died March 31, 2008. He was the second of five children born to John Samuel and Essie Morris Wortham. The family moved from his birthplace in Heard County to Coweta County when he was a small child. He attended a small school in the Welcome Community to which he walked every day. He joined Elim Baptist Church in 1932 and remained there for the rest of his life. He worked at Arnco Mills, then was a veteran of World War II. In 1937 he met and married Clara Wilson. He was in the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Patterson for 16 months. After the war he returned to Newnan, working for R. D. Cole as a welder, and later worked as a steamfitter at Ford Motor Company, Hapeville. He retired in 1980 with 23 years of service.

Max Edwin Griffies Sr.

Max Edwin Griffies Sr., 67, Newnan, died April 4, 2008. He was born Sept. 8, 1940 in Newnan. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edwin Griffies and Lorene Carroll Griffies Musick, his wife, Jane Farmer Griffies, and a grandson, Tommy Whitlock. Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ellis Freeman and Warren Budd officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Patricia Brown Furlough

Patricia Brown Furlough, 74, Sharpsburg, died April 4, 2008. She was born Aug. 7, 1933 in Coweta County. She was preceded in death by he parents, Benjamin Sexton and Katie Sue Manley Brown, and a son, Ernest Neil Thompson. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in the Raymond community. Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Carl Calhoun and the Rev. Donny Shelton officiating. Interment was at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Tristen Allen Bass

Tristen Allen Bass, 10, Dallas, died April 5, 2008, along with his uncle, Phillip Aaron Bass, 30, Dallas, in an accident. Tristen was born Oct. 16, 1997 in Lithia Springs and was a 4th grade student at Abney Elementary School. He was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church in Fayetteville.

Edna Grace Payton

Edna Grace Payton, 88, Senoia, died April 6, 2008. She was born Aug. 5, 1919 in Newnan. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Alma Kelly Garner, her husband, William Floyd Payton, and siblings, Raymond Garner, Grover Garner, and Vennie Garner Mobley. She joined Open Door Baptist Church in 1996 and remained a member until her death.

Katherine Beckham Arrowood

Katherine Beckham Arrowood, 96, Sharpsburg, died April 7, 2008. She was born April 27, 1911 in Giles County, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leroy and Annie Jones Beckham, her husband, Gordon Arrowood, and sons, Michael Edward Arrowood, and Richard Gordon Arrowood. Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with interment at Westview Cemetery, Atlanta. Survivors include children, David and Brenda Arrowood, Roswell, Lethia and Tom Obenchain, Flowery Branch, and Dale and Ann Arrowood, Sharpsburg; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Daisy Mae Whidby Garmon

Daisy Mae Whidby Garmon, 94, Newnan, died April 7, 2008. She was born May 18, 1913, the third of 13 children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Vealie Atwood Whidby, all of her siblings, her husband, J. C. Garmon, who died in 1970, and sons, Harold, Wallace, and Sidney. Graveside services were at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Doraville. The Rev. Bobby Carpenter officiated. Survivors include sons Lawrence Garmon, Newnan, and Roy Garmon, Jonesboro; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

Ruby Alice Strickland Thomas

Ruby Alice Strickland Thomas, 87, Luthersville, died April 7, 2008. She was born Sept. 23, 1920 in Meriwether County. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elonza Floyd and Ruby Alice Whitten Strickland, and her husband, William A. Thomas.

Walton Nathaniel Kelley

Walton Nathaniel "Nat" Kelley, 68, Brooks, died March 29, 2008. He was born July 20, 1939 in Fayette County, son of William Rufus and Caroline Elizabeth Borders Kelley. He was retired after 30 years service with G. and W. Electric in Chicago. Services were at the Carl J. Mowell chapel with the Rev. Walt Langdon officiating. Interment was at the Kelley Family Cemetery in Brooks. Survivors include his wife, Fran Kelley, Brooks; daughters, Janice and Mike Gunnells, Peachtree City, and Michelle and David Leiter, Atlanta; a stepson, Shannon Shepherd, Graham, N. C.; a stepdaughter, Lacey Shepherd, McDonough; grandchildren, Amanda, Grace, Caroline, Emily, and Sam; great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Charlotte; and siblings, Nina, Mary, Dorothy, Gene, and Sue. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Fayetteville, was in charge.

Jackie Tews DeCristoforo

Jackie Tews DeCristoforo, Peachtree City, died March 30, 2008. A brief service was at Carl J. Mowell Funeral Home. Survivors include daughters, Sue and Wayne Monson, Peachtree City, Carol Stark, Menomonee Falls, Wisc., and Jan McConnaughey, Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren, Erik and Bridget Monson, Zach Monson, Brica and Matthew Weimer, Branton Stark, Ian McConnaughey, and Ira McConnaughey; great-grandchildren, Luke Monson, Page Monson, and Zahrina Weimer; and a niece, Mimi Collison, Maryland. Carl J. Mowell & Son Funeral Home, Peachtree City, was in charge.

Carlton L. Deck

Carlton L. Deck, 80, Peachtree City, died March 30, 2008. He was born and raised in Trenton, N.J., and was graduated from Hamilton High School in 1945. He served in the United States Naval Hospital Corps from 1945 to 1947. He then worked for General Electric, and then U. S. Steel. His final and favorite position was as a self-employed cabinetmaker and woodworker. He moved to Peachtree City in 1994 and was active in the Presbyterian Church, first in Morrisville, Pa. and then Peachtree City. He loved crossword puzzles, computers and email, jokes, woodworking and working in his yard. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and kindness to everyone.

David Otting

David Otting, 49, Fayetteville, died April 3, 2008. He was born April 11, 1958 in Bartow County. He was preceded in death by his mother, Alene Baskin Otting. He was a graduate of Cartersville High School and owner-operator of Imagine That Salon, Inc. He loved his children and sacrificed greatly for them. He worked with the Boy Scouts and coached Little League Baseball. He enjoyed fishing, sunrises and sunsets. He was a licensed, certified Sea Captain and a certified barbecue judge traveling all over the nation.

Rassie Lingafelt LaTella

Rassie Lingafelt LaTella, 80, Peachtree City, died April 5, 2008. She had a full and wonderful life in which she totally devoted herself and her love to her family. Graveside services were at Forest Hill Cemetery, Morganton, N.C., the area of her birthplace.
