J. B. Wortham, 90, Newnan, died March 31, 2008. He was the second of five children born to John Samuel and Essie Morris Wortham. The family moved from his birthplace in Heard County to Coweta County when he was a small child. He attended a small school in the Welcome Community to which he walked every day. He joined Elim Baptist Church in 1932 and remained there for the rest of his life. He worked at Arnco Mills, then was a veteran of World War II. In 1937 he met and married Clara Wilson. He was in the United States Navy and served aboard the USS Patterson for 16 months. After the war he returned to Newnan, working for R. D. Cole as a welder, and later worked as a steamfitter at Ford Motor Company, Hapeville. He retired in 1980 with 23 years of service. Services were at the McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Mike Harris officiating. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Newnan. Survivors include a son, Steve and Cheryl Brown Wortham, Hogansville; grandchildren, Scott and Kristi; and sisters, Sara Wortham Alford and Henrietta Wortham Erquitt.
