Southside 'big boxes' spark rift

Providing for "big box" retail development south of Fayetteville sparked a rift in the final Southside Task Force meeting last week. The sheer size of the commercial aspects of the plan nearly 125 acres also caused concern throughout the task force at the final meeting among residents and developers.

Red Cross explains how to send military greetings

Braelinn Village Animal Hospital announces the association of Dr. Chris Boehm. Dr. Boehm is a 1987 graduate of Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is a former Army Aviator and Warrant Officer. He also currently is employed as flight instructor for Delta Airlines. Dr. Boehm, his wife Diane, and son Sean, reside in Peachtree City.

Starr's Mill wins South Metro, Tiger grapplers place second

Starr's Mill won the South Metro Invitational, a 26-team wrestling meet. The Panthers scored 270 points, Fayette County was second with 205 points and Henry County was third with 204.5 points.

Starr's Mill swimmers continue to swim well

The Starr's Mill Panthers swim team continued to look strong in the pool by beating Cherokee High, Sandy Creek High and the Upson-Lee Knights at the Kedron Aquatic Center last Friday.

Lady Tigers dominate end of year softball awards

Though the softball season ended over a month ago, accolades continue to pour in for the state champion Fayette County High School Lady Tigers.

Basketball teams head into holiday break

Most of the local basketball players have something bigger than a regional oponent to face before they start Christmas break: exams. Only McIntosh was scheduled to play last night, while the rest of the county high schools took the night off. Several teams will play in holiday tournaments though, which are scheduled to start tomorrow.

SCAT swims well at two meets

SCAT swimmers placed second overall at the Marietta Marlins Invitational this past weekend, even without the help of some outstanding teammates who were competing at the Dalton Jingle Bell Classic the same weekend. Most of SCAT's senior squad also took the weekend off in preparation for this weekend's Senior State Championships.

The true 'colors' of Christmas ...

Our church just completed its annual presentation of some sort of special Christmas play. For the last two years we have presented renditions of A Cricket County Christmas. It's about two sets of cousins city and country who interact with one another and in all their cultural mix-ups, they experience the true meaning of the Christmas Story.

Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran to offer series of services on Christmas Eve

In celebration of the very heart of Christianity that God came to earth as a human infant the congregation of Christ Our Shepherd Lutheran Church in Peachtree City will hold a series of worship services on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 24.

Tyrone First Christian will present special music program Dec. 22

The Chancel Choir of the First Christian Church of Tyrone will present an evening of secular and sacred Christmas music Sunday, Dec. 22, at 6 p.m. The program is under the direction of James Shelton, minister of music.

North Fayette United Methodist church will have three services Christmas Eve, beginning with a family and children's service at 6 p.m. in the Activities Center. It will feature carols with drum and guitar accompaniment and will end with candle lighting by the entire congregation.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church invites the community to Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion Services, offered at 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 p.m.

First Christian of Tyrone announces services

The First Christian Church of Tyrone will host a Candlelight Communion service at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve, featuring carols, scripture and special music.

St. Mary Magdalene announces Masses

St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Mission in Sharpsburg has announced plans for Christmas and New Year's Masses. All events will be held at East Coweta High School, 400 McCollum-Sharpsburg Rd. (Ga. Hwy. 154).

Senoia UMC sets Christmas services

Senoia United Methodist Church will have Christmas Eve candlelight services, Tuesday, Dec. 24. at 5 and 11 p.m. Both services will include the singing of traditional Christmas carols, a brief Christmas homily by the Rev. Steve Davidson, pastor, Holy Communion, and will conclude with candle lighting.

Coweta ministry seeks donations for local, international missions

The Lord's Place Thrift Store in Grantville, a personal ministry of the Roy Smith family, is still seeking donations for support money and materials for missionaries in the U.S. and abroad. The facility offers saleable throwaway items donated by individuals and churches. Smith states that 100 percent of the money raised from the sale of items goes to missions.

Clayton County's Performing Arts Christmas production starts Friday

A community Christmas musical, "In the Fullness of Time," will be presented at the Clayton County Performing Arts Center Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 20, 21 and 22. The play is written, directed and choreographed by Clayton County native, Melly Meadows, and performed by a cast of hundreds. Admission is free.

Southside plan has model water quality goals

Fayetteville is fast approaching a decision on the plan for the Southside development. The proposed development of this area has caught the attention of many of us that use Ga. Highway 92 or Ga. Highway 85 from the south as we travel to and from Fayetteville.

Remember the simpler days of "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth"? Well, with everything today just short of prenatal orthodontics, getting just two teeth for Christmas is a naive notion. Our "gotta have it all" attitudes seem to be worse than ever. The quaint days of caring and unselfishness during 9/11 seem like a lifetime away now.

Let's cool down about Development Authority

Councilman Murray Weed and I have represented the city in negotiations with the Peachtree City Development Authority for the past several months, and after at least a dozen meetings over a period of months, we managed to hammer out an agreement that was passed by the City Council, subject to clarification of how the debt was incurred and finding the most prudent way of financing the $1.4 million debt.

PTC mayor seems carried away with his new authority

I have lived in Peachtree City for the last seven years. Peachtree City was and is a wonderful, safe,amenities rich, place to raise a family.Since we arrived, a world-class tennis facilitythat has helpful and knowlegeable employees has grown into what could easily be considered one of the best facilities and staff in the South.

Christmas sensitivities: Let's take back the holy day

This past weekend I performed at a large corporate Christmas party in Atlanta for 1,500 people. Before taking the stage, the event coordinator took me aside and instructed me not to play Christmas music. He told me that "Silver Bells" and "Winter Wonderland" were appropriate but I was not to play any secular Christmas melodies or any songs that contained the word Christmas.

Parent furious about deputy's display of weapon in school

My 11-year-old's fifth grade science teacher sent home this little evaluation regarding his in-class report [that] found his topic of guns objectionable. I fired right back at her about the school's DARE instructor. This is a desk-bound deputy who comes into the classrooms a few times a week with a loaded Glock 21, a high-capacity .45 caliber pistol, to "instruct" our kids.

Here's what Ol' Strom had to say while running for president at the head of the State's Rights Democratic party (Dixiecrat) in 1948: "On the question of social intermingling of the races our people draw the line.
