Twas the week before Christmas

By MICHAEL BOYLAN

Oh man, another Christmas column. I promise that next year I won't write one of these until the actual holiday. But this is Holiday Weekend and I must stick with the theme, so here we go.....

Twas the week before Christmas and the house was a mess.

How we would get ready was anyone's guess.

Newspapers scattered like unpiled leaves,

I wished for a butler that I could call Jeeves.

We have company coming and so much to do -

vaccuming, laundry and coffee to brew.

We have been so frazzled, we have yet to buy a tree.

Our house is not looking too Christmas-y.

We have no outdoor outlet, so no outdoor lights.

Plus, I am now wary of ladders and heights.

There's no display in the front yard, spreading good cheer

But I promise that we will do it next year.

The shopping is done, as well as the wrapping

and hopefully, soon it will be time for some napping.

We'll sit by the fire and partake of some nog,

hypnotized by the sparks jumping off the Yule log.

Yes, Christmas has changed for me since I was young

It is not about presents in the stockings I've hung.

It is a day off from work and a chance to sleep late,

playing video games in my PJ's will really be great.

And family, too, that will be nice -

stirring around our new home like hyper little mice.

We'll eat very well and watch some TV,

take in a play, and maybe some hockey.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to deceive.

As much as I like giving, I also like to receive.

I think there will be books, DVDs and some games

and something really cool, or so my wife claims.

And we bought some great presents that folks will enjoy

like ab warmers, ukelele strings and milk made of soy.

I can't really tell you, they're probably reading

that is why I had to be so very misleading.

Christmas is better when it's all a surprise

to finish the rhyme I'll say - Marty McFly's.

So have a good Christmas with your family and friends

and here's wishing that good cheer stays and never ends.
