Kwanzaa celebration at libraryThe Fayette County Public Library and Association of Village PRIDE, Inc. (AVP) will host a Kwanzaa celebration Thursday, Dec. 19, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the library at 1821 Heritage Park Way in Fayetteville. Students who participate in AVP's programs as well as community leaders will present the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Presentations will be made in song, music, dance, poetry or testimony. Following the program there will be the Karamu, or feast. Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community and culture. The word Kwanzaa is derived from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, which means "first fruits of the harvest." It was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga, and was first celebrated in 1966. The seven principles are: Umoja (Unity); Kujichagulia (Self-Determination); Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility); Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics); Nia (Purpose); Kuumba (Creativity) and Imani (Faith). Guests are asked to donate two non perishable food items which will benefit the Fayette Youth Protection Home. For additional information please call Opal O. Murray at 770.631.3041 or Chris Snell at 770.461.8841.
