Starr's Mill wins South Metro, Tiger grapplers place second

Starr's Mill won the South Metro Invitational, a 26-team wrestling meet. The Panthers scored 270 points, Fayette County was second with 205 points and Henry County was third with 204.5 points.

The Panthers had 10 place winners, including four champions and three runners-up.

Champions of their weight class were Mike Cosper (130), Scott Molleson (145), Kyle Verzello (160) and Jordan Powers (171). Second-place winners were Devon King (112), Tyler Kourajian (135) and Nick Bennett (152). The Panthers also had three fourth-place finishers: David Thurber (103), Bruce Ferguson (119) and Andy Smith (275).

Starr's Mill will host the Starr's Mill Invitational this Friday and Saturday. Twenty teams will compete in the tournament, including East Coweta, Newnan, Cherokee, Kennesaw Mountain, and Douglas County among others. The tournament will start at 5:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

Fayette County had nine place winners. Chris Leslie (215) and Will Barnes (189) were both champions, while Joe Strickland (171) and Drake McCoy (275) finished second. Other placers were Zach Stanley (140) and Patrick Kellerman (152) in fourth place, David Soldato (145) in fifth place and Thomas Lowery (112) and Matt Kellerman (130) in sixth place. Fayette County will compete in the Brookwood Invitational this weekend.

McIntosh placed 10th overall at the South Metro Invitational, an improvement from last year's 13th place finish. Place winners for the Chiefs were Justin Edwards, who placed third at 130; Ryan Winter, who placed fifth at 112; and Cameron Hall, who placed second at 160.

"We wrestled good at times but were just not consistent," said Coach Nick Bellantoni. "We realized our mistakes and we are working on improving."

McIntosh will compete in the Starr's Mill Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
