Loy Ann Lee Archilles

Loy Ann Lee Archilles, 76, Ft. Worth, Texas, formerly of Fayetteville, died Aug. 15, 2006. She was the oldest of five children born to Loy Russell and Sara Ann Peak Lee. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles F. “Sonny” Lee, and Auby C. Lee, and a sister, Jane Cordelia Reese. She was a member of the German Language and Culture Society for 30 years, and loved to polka and waltz, especially barefoot. She collected Delft, handkerchiefs, and magnets from around the world. Phillip Joseph Sullivan Jr. 79, Fayetteville, died Aug. 14, 2006. He was born May 31, 1927 in Birmingham, Ala. He was preceded in death by a son, Brad Nickola, a brother, Dr. Gilbert Sullivan, and a sister, Charlotte Sapp. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, World War II, and was a 1950 honors graduate from Auburn University. He was retired from Dupont with 35 years of service. He was an active member of the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church, and was a past president of the Men’s Club. He currently served as head usher. He also served as president of the Kingwood Homeowners Association for 13 years. Services were at the Fayetteville First United Methodist Church chapel with the Rev. Mark Westmoreland officiating. Interment was at Camp Memorial Park, Fayetteville. Frances R. Longley, 82, Atlanta, died Aug. 12, 2006. She was born in Fayette County, daughter of the late John and Maude Lloyd Robinson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles S. Longley Sr., and a sister, Geri Townsend. She was a long time member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. She had been a medical lab technician at West Paces Ferry Hospital prior to retirement. Elizabeth Monterey Vaillancourt Croley

Elizabeth Monterey “Betty” Vaillancourt Croley, 82, College Park, died Aug. 4, 2006. She was born Aug. 26, 1923 in Fulton County. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Daniel F. Croley, and a daughter, Jane Croley Spradlin. She was a professional seamstress whose knowledge and skill created a loyal following for more than 60 years. She was a member of the College Park First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, had chaired the Ruth Circle, and had served as Sunday School president. She was a past president of the College Park Historical Society, and a member of Young-at-Heart Club. Services were at the College Park First United Methodist Church with the Rev. James McRae, and the Rev. Beth Sanders officiating. Interment was at the College Park Cemetery. F.E. Markham

F. E. “Bud” Markham, 84, Newnan, died July 28, 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Markham, a son, Scott Markham, and a daughter, Linda Markham. He served in the United States Army, as a Marine in World War II and the Korean War. As a part of the 1st Marine Division, 5th Regiment, he was the second man in the first wave of Marines to step foot on Red Beach, Guadalcanal, a Japanese-held island stronghold. He was a communications operator and was responsible for working first-hand with the Navajo Code Talkers. He retired in 1966 as Chief Warrant Officer and recently as 2005 continued to educate local high school students about his experiences in World War II. He enjoyed traveling in his R. V. with his dog Sugar, as well as his companion, Nell Justice. He had a lifelong passion for baseball, and as a semi-pro player enjoyed coaching at LaGrange College with his son, Scott. His grandson, Matt Perdue, played with the minor-league Pensacola Penguins. Memorial services were at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Newnan. Margaret Smith Alford

Margaret Smith Alford, 92, Palmetto, died July 26. 2006. She was born Aug. 27, 1913 in Perry, Ga. She was one of five children born to Hude S. and Minnie Sue Peavey Smith. She was reared in Unadilla, and was a graduate of the University of Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Helion G. Alford in Nov., 1987. They had established Alford’s stores in Palmetto, Fayetteville, Fairburn, and Newnan. They sold the business in 1970 and enjoyed traveling round the world. She was active in the Palmetto Baptist Church, had served as a councilwoman in Palmetto, as well as Mayor Pro Tem. She also served on the Board of Planning and Zoning Appeals for Fulton County. Services were at the Palmetto Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jimmy Orr officiating. Interment was at Bethesda United Methodist Church cemetery, Lawrenceville. Survivors include a son, Walter H. and Susanne Alford, Ponte Verde Beach, Fla., and Cashiers, N. C.; a daughter, Emasue Alford Vereen, Atlanta; a sister, Edna Hooper, Unadilla; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. George O. Allen Jr., Fayetteville, died July 24, 2006. He was born Nov. 2,1929 in Butts County, Ga. He was veteran of the United States Army, having served in Korea. The Rev. Allan Todd, 44, of Peachtree City, died August 3, 2006 of a sudden illness. He was born Sept. 15, 1961, in Houston, Texas. He was a minister in the United Methodist Church, having served as senior pastor, associate pastor and youth minister in several metro Atlanta churches over the past 19 years. He most recently was the founding pastor of a new United Methodist Church, Lighthouse UMC in Peachtree City. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Pamela Todd of Peachtree City; daughters, Abby and Hannah Todd of Peachtree City; mother, Susie Todd of Gainesville, Fla.; aunt, Janie Autz of Dallas, Texas.
