F. E. “Bud” Markham, 84, Newnan, died July 28, 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Markham, a son, Scott Markham, and a daughter, Linda Markham. He served in the United States Army, as a Marine in World War II and the Korean War. As a part of the 1st Marine Division, 5th Regiment, he was the second man in the first wave of Marines to step foot on Red Beach, Guadalcanal, a Japanese-held island stronghold. He was a communications operator and was responsible for working first-hand with the Navajo Code Talkers. He retired in 1966 as Chief Warrant Officer and recently as 2005 continued to educate local high school students about his experiences in World War II. He enjoyed traveling in his R. V. with his dog Sugar, as well as companion, Nell Justice. He had a lifelong passion for baseball, and as a semi-pro player enjoyed coaching at LaGrange College with his son, Scott. His grandson, Matt Perdue, played with the minor-league Pensacola Penguins. Memorial services were at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Newnan.Survivors include a sister, Shirley Powell, Orlando, Fla.; a nephew, Dan Powell, Dacula; daughter-in-law, Carl Markham, Newnan; a son, David and Deborah Markham, Fayetteville; a daughter, Betty and Jack Perdue, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Bethany Perdue, Karin and Matt Texidor, and Matthew Perdue, all of Wisconsin, Mathew and Carrie Markham, Atlanta, Brad and Angie Markham, Newnan, Justin and Nicole Markham, Grantville, and Stephanie Markham, Athens, Ga.; and great-grandchildren, Elise Texidor, Jacob Markham, Julie Burkhalter, and two on the way. Memorial donations may be made to the Navajo Ministries, P. O. Box 1230, Farmington, N. M. 87499, attn: Four Corners Home for Children.
