Panthers and Tigers pick up wins over Chiefs, Wildcats get first win
The McIntosh Chiefs did not have a great weekend and the fact that the two losses they picked up came against local rivals make the losses sting that much more.
Panthers sweep Whitewater, while McIntosh tops Tigers
Whitewater’s varsity girls and boys soccer teams hosted Starr’s Mill on Friday night. The games were battles between teams that were ranked in the top 10 of their respective classifications and both Starr’s Mill teams won.
Season gets underway with local track meet
Starr’s Mill hosted the Panther Relays on Saturday. Twenty seven teams competed in the meet and local teams represented themselved well.
Big weekend of cycling starts Saturday morningOn March 18 and 19, the Fayette County Classic cycling race, formerly the Brooks Omnium, will provide Fayette County with its first taste of excitement in revving up for April’s Ford Tour de Georgia stage in downtown Fayetteville. The event has also teamed up with the Peachtree City Tourism Association and Tennis Center on Saturday night to offer an evening of fun and excitement for racers and fans alike. FCHS to induct new class into Athletic Hall of FameFayette County High School will hold their athletic hall of fame dinner and induction ceremony on Saturday, March 18. Tiger Martial Arts sent seven athletes to the National Open Martial Arts Tae Kwon Do Championships at the Life University gym on Saturday, March 4. These young athletes did very well, especially since it was the first competitive event for some of them.
War Eagles stay hot, Patriots cooled off by IndiansThe Landmark Christian War Eagle varsity baseball team is off to 7-0 start, having defeated Creekside, Brookstone and Paideia this week. Landmark track warms up for 2006 seasonThe Landmark Christian School track teams traveled to Mill Creek for a practice meet against other 5A schools. The War Eagles performed extremely well and were paced by some great performances. Here are some of the top performers. Tennis Center hosting USTA Junior tournament this weekendThe Peachtree City Tennis Center will host 100 USTA junior players March 10-12 beginning Friday evening. This is a first match consolation format where players are guaranteed two matches over the weekend. Divisions include boys and girls ages 10-18. Wednesday night was a good night for local baseball teams. The McIntosh Chiefs fell behind Lovejoy heading into the bottom half of the first inning and then exploded offensively, winning 17-4. The Chiefs got three home runs and seven RBIs from Drew Fausett and also got a home run from Cameron Wallis.
Teams get big wins, prepare for rivalries on Friday night
The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers (4-1) handed the East Coweta Lady Panthers (7-1) their first loss of the season on Tuesday night by defeating them 4-0. Gina Goforth scored a hat trick in the game and Laura McCalla scored the other goal, while McCalla, Katie Jacobsen and Tanna Castro (2) assisted on the goals. Allie Matulia and Katelynn Morgan shared goalkeeping duties. Matulia made five saves, while Morgan made four saves.
Panthers run well at Wheeler Relays, host big meet on Saturday
The Starr’s Mill track team traveled to Cobb County to compete in the Wheeler Relays this past weekend. Several outstanding performances were turned in by the group.
Starr's Mill boys and girls win PTC High School InvitationalEleven teams participated in the Peachtree City High School Invitational last weekend at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. The Starr’s Mill boys and girls teams both won the tournament. It was the first time that the Lady Panthers had won the tournament, while it was the second year in a row for the boys. Lazers a classic in Cobb tournament
The Peachtree City Boys '95 Lazers competed in the Cobb Classic soccer tournament on Feb.
Motocross champ Bentley visits St. Paul Lutheran SchoolThere was a definite roar in the crowd this week when St. Paul students celebrated National Lutheran Schools Week. What really revved up the students was an appearance by motocross champion Shae Bentley and his motorcycle during a special assembly to “kick start” the week’s activities. Entering week 2: Several teams still perfect in young seasonStarr’s Mill’s varsity baseball team (5-0), ranked seventh in Class AAAAA in a GaSports.com coaches poll, had two big games over the weekend. On Friday, the Panthers defeated Thomas County Central 16-6. Ryan Haynie was the winning pitcher and the offense was clicking, batting around in the third and fourth innings, scoring five in the third and seven in the fourth. Jimmy Tanner went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and Joey Lewis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Spencer Shelton went 3-for-4 at the plate and T.J. Stillwell went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Lots of bicycle racing in Brooks and Fayetteville next weekendThe Brooks Road Race/Fayette County Classic offers a full weekend of bicycle racing on exciting courses. The Road Race on Saturday is the same course as years past, starting at Brooks Elementary, while the brand new Time Trial and Criterium courses for 2006, which will take place around the Old Courthouse Square in Fayetteville, are phenomenal. The 12U Grizzlies were the Fayette County league champions after an undefeated regular season.
Panthers edge Chiefs, 1-0The only goal came off the foot of Starr's Mill's Riley Phelps, but it was enough to give the Panthers the bragging rights back. The goal came in the second minute of the game. After that the two teams battled fairly evenly. McIntosh appeared to have the edge in shots in the second half but couldn't find the equalizer. Lady Chiefs hand Lady Patriots first lossThe Sandy Creek Lady Patriots entered their Thursday night game against McIntosh without a loss. The fifth ranked Lady Chiefs handed Sandy Creek an 8-0 loss though, dominating the game and keeping the ball in the Lady Patriot half of the field for much of the game. McIntosh scored five goals in the first half, including one off of a penalty kick. Sandy Creek (2-1-1) does not have long to dwell on the game though, as they are scheduled to take on Fayette County’s Lady Tigers on the road today at noon. The East Coweta girls have a perfect 6-0 record thus far this season. On Wendesday night, the Lady Indians blanked Lovejoy 7-0. Tonight they face LaGrange and will have their biggest test on Tuesday when they travel to take on Starr’s Mill at 5:30 p.m.
Hot start for local teams
The Starr’s Mill Panthers have jumped out to a 3-0 record to start the 2006 high school varsity baseball season.
Kuhr named Volunteer of the Year
Denny Kuhr of Peachtree City was recently selected by Winchester Ammunition as the Quail Unlimited, National Volunteer of the Year.
Ride horses in spring break camp, Apr. 3-6
Quail Ridge Farm has open registration for horsemanship camps Spring Break. The camp is designed for each rider’s experience level and skill set. The three camp levels are beginner, intermediate and advanced. Intermediate level campers must be jumping cross rails and Advanced level campers must be jumping 2’.
PTC Kiwanis supports Special Olympics
The Kiwanis Club of Peachtree City recently donated $500 in support of the Fayette County Special Olympics. Special Olympics provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
