...when we do not take the time to truly identify who it is we place into public office/trust. It is indeed difficult to become answerable to a public for which one serves, but to my knowledge each individual elected to office has done so voluntarily.

There has been controversy and some sensationalism surrounding the on-line political forums presented by The Citizen, but objectively…why shouldn’t “ordinary” citizens be able to reach and question candidates for leadership in our community, and why wouldn’t a political candidate welcome the opportunity to present their views. Why wouldn’t any method of communication be considered viable and valuable? Aren’t curious, informed, concerned and involved citizens and voters what we want? How can citizens be well represented collectively and individually when there is no communication and no true discourse? How far off the path of democracy have we veered when those in political power choose to sit aloof and untouchable? Are we truly in a “them” and “us” society, and is this where we should be, especially on the local level?
