Isn't LaGrange a conclave somewhere in central Georgia, near Alabama, where things haven't changed much in 150 years?

I read something about it and am further interested in it's history.
For instance what went on there in the 1850-60s? Why was the town started? Railroad maybe for cotton? Or was it strictly mills?

Are there any yankees there?
