Seniors leading with passion, FCHS is backWhat would you consider a long time — one year, two years, five, how about 10? It’s been 10 painstaking years since Fayette High has been to the Dome. And now, the whole school, no, the whole county is watching and waiting. McIntosh fortunate to have current coachesI feel compelled to respond to Gary Peters’ letter concerning the football coaching at MHS. He feels the team needs a coaching upgrade after attending one game. Gary, where have you been the last few years? Tyrone Council has done little for Shamrock ParkI was appointed co chair of the Shamrock Park Restoration Committee on Jan. 6, 2006, by Mayor Lee and the Tyrone Town Council. Candidate Haddix: Here’s what I will vote for, what I won’t vote forFirst of all, I would like to thank everyone from the Rotary, who set up the great candidates forum. From the introduction letter to the forum close, it was well-done. Candidate O’Toole: Sewer should not be extended outside boundariesAs I continue to walk the neighborhoods of Peachtree City, go to community activities, receive email and speak directly with the citizens, I have been surprised at the number of folks who compliment me and thank me for my courage in running for City Council. Paper shouldn’t print perps’ job infoI am a local business owner and am very disappointed in a recent article published in your newspaper. The article appeared in your September 29, 2007, issue and dealt with some local drug arrests. The Kohl’s discussion: A lot of spin and liesThis has been quite a month for discussing the value of telling truth. One of the most celebrated female athletes in world, Marion Jones, confessed seven years after the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games that she used performance-enhancing drugs. She formerly lied to federal agents about using the drugs and participating in a check-fraud scheme. The fate of PTC’s West Side lies not in developers’ hands, but in yoursThe issue of granting a special use permit for a Kohl’s on Ga. Highway 54 West has been the most recent heated debate. But this is but one facet of the eventuality that will be the west side. Candidate King: Current councilmen not listening to residents on Kohl’sIt’s hard to believe that nearly two years have passed since electing Mr. Logsdon and Mr. Boone to represent those who put them in their respective offices. Candidate Sturbaum: Yes to senior center expansion, no to high taxesMany issues continue to come to the forefront in PTC that need to be addressed. The underlying issue is that what occurs in the first week of November will tell us residents where we are going to end up at over the next 10-20 years. Candidate Haddix: Here’s where I and my opponents differ on issuesTwo new issues in discussion, first being reclassifying certain PTC jobs to “at will.” At this point in time, all I can comment on are general principles. Vet, helpers made heroic efforts, but pet dog diedIt is with a heavy, yet encouraged, heart that I write this letter. On Aug. 23, my family witnessed our beloved weimaraner, Heide, die at Southern Crescent Animal Emergency Clinic in Fayetteville. Former mayor offers his version of realityWell I can now say, without a doubt, my letter from last week on the proposed Kohl’s which highlighted an objective rationale based on a factual historical perspective and our documented ordinances and plans certainly hit a nerve in our community. Instead of writing a letter, talk to the football coachI've been to more than one McIntosh football game. I've been to every game for both JV and varsity. I've also been to one ninth grade game this year and all of them last year. In addition, I stop by once or twice a week to watch part of practice. More importantly I have met the coaches and talked to them. It's not that I love football. Candidate Harman outlines his plans for Peachtree CityFellow citizens of Peachtree City, my name is Mike Harman and I am currently your city councilman for Post #1. I was appointed to this position by the other four members of the city council to fill the position vacated by Judi Ann Rutherford. I am also running for this same position in the upcoming November election. I am writing this letter to ask for your vote in that election. Sewer should not be extended outside city’s boundariesAs I continue to walk the neighborhoods of Peachtree City, go to community activities, receive email and speak directly with the citizens, I have been surprised at the number of folks who compliment me and thank me for my courage in running for City Council. Don’t let all the misinformation sway you about Kohl’sIn response to Mr. John Lyden’s letter to the editor, “Realistic view of Kohl’s: It’s the best we can get” It may be “the best you could get,” the rest of us know better! Let me start off by stating the “facts” correctly. Your point 1, “a great number of Peachtree City citizens, including myself, would prefer to see that land remain covered in trees,” is naive at best. Residents need to start fighting back against all the developersI couldn’t believe how pitifully spineless John Lyden’s letter was on the Kohl’s store being forced down our throats. We have a bunch of cowards on their hands and knees begging us to let a tyrant developer terrorize and intimidate us into giving him city property and throwing years of outstanding planning out the window! Mr. Lynden said Peachtree City’s big box ordinance wouldn’t hold up to a court challenge. How in the heck would he know? You would think if the ordinance couldn’t muster a court challenge, the tyrant developer wouldn’t have to resort to terrorizing and frightening everyone and the Lowe’s wouldn’t have to try to sneak in on industrial land to get around the law. He lies on saying, “I believe this developer began the process in the right way.” Mr. Lynden, you are completely nuts! The tyrant developer began “the process” by threatening us with destructive junk development if we failed to fall on our knees and bow down to him. I’m sick and tired of a bunch of terrified whiners asking us to ditch laws designed to protect us and to start worshiping a bullying developer so they won’t be scared. A huge number of us moved to Peachtree City when there were no big box stores and things were a lot better then. So Mr. Lynden go move to Newnan and enjoy the wonderful quality of life the Kohl’s and other big box stores provide on Bullsboro Parkway. Leave our city alone and let us keep the kind of planning we have always enjoyed! It's time to fight back! It's not snobbery that makes residents want to keep their investment maintainedI am sick to death at hearing and reading that all residents of Peachtree City are elitist snobs. Why is it snobbery for wanting to protect your investment and keep the community the type of place that U.S. News and World Report lists as one of the top ten places to retire? To quote from that report "lush greenery eclipses buildings, making the wooded town feel tucked away in its own world." (The Citizen--9/26/07-page 1). When all the greenery has made way for asphalt and all wooded areas are replaced with big box stores, we will no longer be on these lists. We will then be one of many areas that have become wall to wall shops, no character, no ambience, nothing to attract anyone to the area. What happens when the big box stores decide to close down and move to another location? Drive to some of the neighboring counties and see where this has happened and the stores remain shuttered and in disrepair or are taken over by less desirable tenants. Is this what we want for our city? Realistic view of Kohl’s: It’s the best we can getI want to offer here the viewpoint of a person who is hopeful that the character of Peachtree City can be preserved for years to come, but also realistic enough to see that while we can have a positive affect on change, we cannot have complete control over all changes in our community. 7 objective reasons to oppose Kohl’s big box project as detrimental to PTCI had a woman tell me last week my standards are too high. Her comment came as a result of my views in the ongoing Kohl’s debate. Columnist Walter Williams insults blacksI was amused by Walter Williams’ recent column where he criticized Hillary Clinton for “mimicking black voice” when she included the line, “I don’t feel noways tired,” in a speech she gave to the First Baptist Church of Selma, Ala. Haddix: Clear differences between candidatesI believe I have honestly laid out my reasons for running for council and my agenda over the last few weeks. Campaign vagueness has always bothered me, so I do not want to be guilty of the very same thing. O’Toole: Maintain a family-friendly, green cityWe live in a special and unique place called Peachtree City. Over the past few weeks, I have had the distinct pleasure of working with the members of our community in multiple activities and this has strengthened my conviction to protect the promise of Peachtree City. Police hidden ‘trap’ spurs boycott of TyroneI wanted to let you know that I have been starting a drive to boycott the city of Tyrone until the police department disengages with covert traffic enforcement activities. Help needed to save Jekyll from developmentI read with great pleasure Grace Caldwell’s statement, in yesterday’s edition of The Citizen, on the need for Georgians around the state to take a stand on keeping Jekyll Island State Park affordable by signing the online petition available at www.savejekyllisland.org. Ann Coulter lies, breeds hate, spews bitternessI would like to address Mr. Johnson’s comments: Way to go! I hate to read your paper for that exact reason. I have done my very best to stop having it thrown in my yard. But since I don’t have a choice, I will give you my opinion. Liberals can dish it out, but can’t take it in returnWhat a surprise, another liberal/progressive who doesn’t like Ann Coulter. By the way, who do liberals/progressives think they’re kidding with their phony monikers? MHS Chiefs need a coaching upgradeI attended my first McIntosh Chiefs varsity football game this past Friday (9/21). I do not claim to be an expert on high school football coaching, but I have had many years of bleacher and armchair coaching while watching many other high schools, colleges and professional teams. Pfeifer: ‘I apologize for amending minutes’When I questioned the recent proposal for redrawing the County Commission districts, the finger was pointed at me, and it was said that I opposed this because, “I just wanted to keep the smallest district and have fewer opponents.” |
