Maxwell tries cover-up, conflict of interest

I was shocked to read that Fayette County Commissioner Eric Maxwell, an attorney by trade, actually came to the Peachtree City Municipal Court representing a client. The problem was he still remains a back-up judge for the court.

Citizens fought Kroger and won; now fight Kohl’s

The Peachtree City mayor, council and many citizens fought the proposed leasing of the Kroger store to Goodwill and won. Bravo!

Why should PTC give in to Kohl’s developer, Wieland?

Why should we care what John Wieland says he wants for Peachtree City? He does not live here, only makes big bucks and moves on to another tract to start all over again. He does not have to see his community ruined as we do. Overcrowded schools, traffic congestion, inflated property taxes, etc.

PTC Goodwill store: Are we building a fortress here?

I received an email today from a representative of PTCCA suggesting I call and protest Kroger’s move to sublease their store at Ga. Highway 54 and Peachtree Parkway to Goodwill Industries.

Neighborhoods ready to make Kroger pay

I live in a subdivision called Greensway. It sits behind the shopping center where the Kroger is closing and the Goodwill is coming.

PTC wrong to reject ‘New urbanism’; it could mean return to PTC vision

After reading the letter submitted by Beth Pullias and re-reading the original article by John Munford, I was dismayed at the amount of uninformed rhetoric printed in The Citizen.

Kroger-Goodwill snafu based on fear of competition; now PTC ire raised

[The following letter was sent to David Dillon, CEO of The Kroger Co. in Cincinnati, Ohio.]

This past Friday, I called your office and spoke with Pat Collins, your executive assistant, about the situation here in Peachtree City regarding Kroger’s inane decision to sublet the retail space of your existing Kroger near my home to Goodwill Industries.

Dysfunctional commission, get your act together

As a clinical social worker and a candidate for state House of Representatives, I feel I must step up to the plate and ask that our County Commissioners take another look at what they are about.

Council needs sunshine, tough development rules

It has been an eventful week since the last letters to the editor.

Hats off to the citizens of Peachtree City for acting swiftly and decisively to let Kroger and Goodwill know that what was planned for Peachtree Crossing was unacceptable.

There goes Fayette’s low-density zoning

Frick, Frack and Frady drop a bombshell.

You ask, Who are Frick, Frack and Frady? For the sake of these comments, Frick stands for Eric Maxwell, Frack stands for Jack Smith and of course Frady is none other than Herb Frady. Frick and Frack are our two newest Fayette County commissioners who took office in January 2007. Frady has been a county commissioner for far too long.

Wieland wants New Urbanism for PTC? What he really wants is more money

That is what the headline should have read last week in place of “Wieland wants New Urbanism for PTC”: He does not want new urbanism for Peachtree City; he wants it for himself because it means more money in his pocket.

Big box debate: Most concerned about wrong issue

Citizens, our Peachtree City government and the media are concerning themselves daily on whether or not we should allow a Kohl’s department store to be built near the entrance of Planterra Ridge subdivision — another “big box store” for Peachtree City.

9-11 memories still painfully fresh after visit to site of NYC’s Twin Towers

In the six years that have elapsed since the Twin Towers fell, I have learned of at least four people who lost their lives that day whom I either knew or had some connection with. One of them was an extended family member who was a lieutenant with the New York City Fire Department.

Humane Society aids animal shelter

We were glad to see your recent article, “Animal services director is picked for advisory board.“ Mr. Abi-Hassan has been instrumental in making many improvements to the Fayette County Animal Shelter. We would like to congratulate him on his appointment.

Help preserve public’s Jekyll Island

Please view the website www.savejekyllisland.org and vote to save the island for the “common folks” of Georgia.

Also, please note that state Senator Jeff Chapman is the only state representative that has taken a proactive stance in preserving the island and also has requested the Jekyll Island Development Authority re-send the request for a $10 million rent break for the nation’s largest developer, Trammell Crowe.

Former Mayor Brown: PTC Council may gut rule controlling big boxes

“Don’t call his (the big box developer’s) bluff” was the cry from one of the homeowners association presidents living adjacent to the proposed Kohl’s site on Ga. Highway 54 West.

Big boxes never pay for themselves in taxes

Development, especially Big Box, is again a major issue.

We are hearing dire warnings against not going along with developers. As in, you don’t develop what they want, you might very well end up with a smokestack facility or they will give us businesses that are noisy and not desirable.

New retail centers should be forced to prove pluses outweigh minuses

Peachtree City is at a crossroads of its existence. What occurs in the next two to four years will define how PTC will turn out in 20 years.

‘Ban Coulter’ letter got expected response

I was pleased to observe the reaction that was stimulated as a result of my appeal to this paper regarding Ann Coulter’s “contributions.” I’m surprised it wasn’t greater, considering this county.

Congress should retake its power to declare war; then talk about the draft

As we enter the 54th month of combat in Iraq and some units, and individual service members, are on their third, and in some cases fourth, tour of duty, now 15 versus 12 months in length, the issue of how we man our armed forces during a time of “war” has resurfaced.

Road check nets four arrests

The late night hours along Ga. Highway 85 in Fayetteville Aug. 31 were wet and muggy, even after the rain stopped around 11 p.m. That is when Fayetteville Police and Fayette Sheriff’s deputies began a road safety check in locations around town that ran until nearly 3 a.m.

Haddix for PTC Post 1: ‘Don’t need more retail, housing developments’

Again the issue of sewer tie-ins is a prominent election issue.

In the Aug. 29 issue of The Citizen, both former Mayor Steve Brown (Letters to the Editor, “WASA finances: no need to go to Tyrone”) and Dennis Chase (Columnists, “Some serious questions regarding PTC sewer”) bring out some serious facts and concerns about what appointed Council member Mike Harman brings to the City Council in his thinking and priorities.

O’Toole for PTC Post 1: Promote responsible redevelopment

On Friday afternoon, Aug. 31, 2007, with my family present, I signed the declaration to be a candidate for Peachtree City Council Post 1.

King for PTC Post 2: Upgrade Coweta roads, halt sewer expansion

Since announcing my candidacy for the City Council of Peachtree City, my conversations with friends and neighbors concerning the direction of our fair city and its governance have solidified my stance on some of the issues facing us today. I take this opportunity to express where I stand on two and a couple of random thoughts.

Open letter to a thief

This is an open letter to a thief.

When you came into my yard and stole a truck tool box, you didn’t just steal a tool box, you stole a dream.

Even deputy joins ‘war’ of motorists vs. cyclists

Why does the battle continue between cyclists and motorists? I am both, and I don’t condone nor understand the harassment that motorists dish out to cyclists on our county roads.

At-large voting disenfranchises everyone in Fayette County

On Thursday, Aug. 23, the Fayette County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation to honor the 250th birthday of the county’s namesake, the Marquis de LaFayette.

Ban Coulter from paper

I can no longer tolerate the fact that you continue to give that excuse for an editorial contributor, Ann Coulter, an outlet in your paper.

WASA finances: No need to go to Tyrone

A gentleman at a local conference told me I ought to write about Mayor Logsdon abstaining on his pay increase vote — an issue for which he had no legal right to withhold his vote — and all I will say on the matter is I was not surprised. Such a pusillanimous act further exposes the character imperfections of a campaign that promised leadership and financial accountability.

PTC candidate questions PTC sewer

Some things stick in my mind from the special council meeting to choose a new council member.

I was asked about my comments concerning better communications with the citizens, advocacy and how to get more income for the PTC government.
