The late night hours along Ga. Highway 85 in Fayetteville Aug. 31 were wet and muggy, even after the rain stopped around 11 p.m. That is when Fayetteville Police and Fayette Sheriff’s deputies began a road safety check in locations around town that ran until nearly 3 a.m.

By the end of the night, four arrests had been made and 18 citations had been issued.

Arrests were on drug violations and DUI charges while the citations included infractions such as suspended license, expired tag, unlicensed driver, revoked permit and child restraint violations, according to Fayetteville Police spokesperson Lt. Beverly Trainor.

A combined total of nearly 700 vehicles were checked on Hwy. 85 and later along South Jeff Davis and Jimmie Mayfield. The road safety checks were conducted by Maj. Kevin Gooding and five Fayetteville police officers and Lt. Col. Wayne Hannah along with nine sheriff’s deputies.
