Even deputy joins ‘war’ of motorists vs. cyclists

Why does the battle continue between cyclists and motorists? I am both, and I don’t condone nor understand the harassment that motorists dish out to cyclists on our county roads.

I don’t like it when I am yelled at, cursed, or have cars come menacingly close to me at 40+ mph, but when it comes to one of our “finest” doing the same, it doesn’t bode well at all.

On Thursday, July 5, at approximately 10 a.m., myself and two other riders were cycling on Old Greenville Road, a road which has the “Share the Road” signs, and is assumed to be “bicycle friendly.”

We were riding single-file when a booming voice on sheriff’s loudspeaker told us to “Move to the side of the road NOW!”

How much farther could we have gotten over, and it is still lawful to ride two abreast at that? He not only startled us, but when he came by us at nearly 50 mph with only about a foot of leeway. It was not only dangerous to us, but purely harassment by him.

The law, if he knew it, states that motorists must give cyclists at least three feet of clearance while passing if possible. He had a full lane empty beside him. If only I had had his number. I hope that his department is reading this now.

Please be kind to cyclists; they are parents, friends, and people like you, who only want to enjoy the journey and return home safely.

Gee... I'm glad someone else gets irritated at the cyclists who ride in the middle of the lanes rather than off to the side. It's about time the law started cracking down on some of you knuckleheads. About 30% of you guys are giving your recreational activity a real bad rap.

I conversed with Amy about this and she said that they were positioned properly on the roadway. BTW, hello from DFW again.

The law also says that you as a cyclist have to stay as far to the right as practical.

Even if the opposite lane was clear, were you going around a curve where the line of sight is limited? I drive on old Greenville road it has many curves which makes it unsafe to pass.

I bet you were riding 3 across. You are allowed to ride 2 across. With the increase in traffic on that road it really isn't safe.

Most of the cops here are pretty easy going, you must have been doing something to provoke him.

You do know if you can't pass safely you don't attempt the pass, regardless of what type legitimate road user is ahead of you, correct? Or do you?

As for most cops and their understanding of the Georgia Vehicle Code (GVC), as it pertains to bicycling, it has been my experience that some do not have a clue. When I was commuting to ATL from Fayetteville - Riverdale PD had a nasty habit of coming behind me and getting on their load speaker and telling me to get off the road -which I ignored. After about the third or fourth time of this I went to their office and spoke to the traffic watch commander. I informed him on what his officers were doing and I wanted to know what GVC supported their position. He had to look it up and of course couldn't find anything. With that revelation he told me that he'll inform his officers.
