Re-run episode of ‘Driving while black in F’ville’

By sharing my sons’ recent account of horrific treatment by the Fayetteville Police, I hoped it would thwart further incidents; but unfortunately, the harassment intensified and my sons were apprehended again.

Driving while black: Another view

A rebuttal to Ms Wendy L Scales-Johnson’s article “Driving while black in Fayetteville, Ga”:

Just one county over, Clayton County, there are at least two killings a week, numerous drug busts, robberies, break-ins, abductions, cars stolen, molestations, beatings and the list goes on and on.

Young Americans have spoken: They’re seeking candidates of hope, optimism

The young adults of America have spoken loud and clear about their desire for political change because they want a future.

Global warming, yes; but also consider that global cooling may occur at same time

A student’s opinion on global warming as follows:

My hypothesis: Global warming is real; however, so is global cooling. Some areas will heat up dramatically and some will cool down exponentially.

Epps columns: Just don’t read them

Recently I read in The Citizen a letter critical of David Epps’ column.

I like Dr. Epps’ column. His is usually the first thing I read. I do not always agree with him, but respect his point of view. One cannot always be right, as I currently am. I once was wrong about something myself!

F’ville police response to ‘driving while black’

After reading the letter to the editor written by Wendy L. Scales-Johnson, I was concerned that officers in Fayette County would treat people the way that Mrs. Scales-Johnson described. I also was concerned that, since Ingles Grocery Store is located in the city, Fayetteville police officers may have been involved.

Ga.’s gun laws – even for those with permits – make sitting ducks of us all

Jeanne Assam, the worshipper in Colorado Springs, Colo., who recently carried two concealed weapons to act as a volunteer security guard at her church, is a heroine who saved countless lives, but if she did the same in Georgia, she would be a criminal facing a prison term.

Cartoon an example of ‘holier than thou’ party

I liked the punch line in Wednesday’s political cartoon, “Lots of Republicans actually believe their religious stuff,” no doubt implying that those of the Democratic Party persuasion pay just lip-service to their religion.

Legislature must stop abuse of ‘P’ cards by state workers

To state Senator Ronnie Chance: In November we sent you a letter regarding three issues for the upcoming legislative session. They involved the water shortage, public education in Georgia, and the abuse of the “P” credit card by a number of state employees.

F’ville author Robert Burch was true ‘Southern gentelman’

The residents of Villas at Gingercake, where the esteemed Robert Burch resided for the last years of his life, shall greatly miss this Southern gentleman.

Burch made everyone feel like his own ‘special friend’

In honor and in memory of my special friend, Robert Burch.

When I say special, he was a special friend and always made me feel like I was a special friend to him.

‘Driving while black in Fayetteville, Ga.’

Friday night, my two sons were driving past the Ingles on Ga. Highway 92 when my oldest son noticed the car of a friend who had recently graduated from Whitewater High School with him. So, he decided to stop and get reacquainted.

Southern hospitality missing for soldier’s kin

My father is in the Army and has been deployed to Iraq since the summer of 2006. He will not be back until May of 2008. I attend college at Pennsylvania State University, so it’s just my full-time-working mother and my younger brother on their own, since all of our relatives live in Massachusetts.

Special election winner Ramsey says thanks for vote in House District 72

Last week the people of Fayette County elected me to represent them in the Georgia General Assembly. This is without question the greatest honor of my professional life, and my profound gratitude to the many people who supported me is surpassed only by the overwhelming sense of responsibility I now feel towards all of the people of our community. I never could have imagined that I would be blessed with such a great privilege.

Runner-up Brown congratulates Ramsey

I offer congratulations to Representative-elect Matt Ramsey. Protect our people and never waver from their best interest; I wish you success.

Tennant: ‘Who says nice guys finish last?’

I had the privilege of casting the first early ballot for Matt Ramsey at the Peachtree City library. My vote immediately followed a gathering of Ramsey supporters at Picnic Park a week before the special election.

Haddix hopes for ‘successful relationship’

Congratulations to Matt Ramsey on his District 72 win.

We have talked briefly and will talk more.

May we have a long and successful relationship between our political offices. There are many ways Peachtree City can be served more successfully, together by our remaining true to the campaign promises which had shared goals.

Reader decries judge’s ruling

Dear Editor:

I always thought that rape was against the law. On Dec. 19 I witnessed an entire community being raped and basically told to enjoy it, because of a technicality in the minutes of the protest meeting at Fairburn City Council August 27. Judge T. Jackson Bedford was obligated to approve the proposed garbage transfer station by Walker Brothers. Our legal system no longer cares about the citizens it is supposed to protect. People, who have saved for years to purchase their homes, will see their homes depreciate to the point that their equity is greatly reduced.

New maps leave many feeling unrepresented

I am the mother of two children who attend Huddleston Elementary School. My background is in clinical psychology, and I have worked with children and families in the mental health field for many years. We live in a Stevens Entry neighborhood, south of Ga. Highway 54.

School workers deserve perk of choosing their kids’ schools

At a time when the redistricting issue is creating unease in our county, the front page article about the perk teachers and employees of Fayette County Board of Education have in choosing the school for their children was inappropriate and a low blow and a discourtesy to teachers and employees of our schools.

Some facts regarding letter about helping veterans, choice and just wars

Reading the response of Mr. Hoffman to my letter to the editor did solve one dilemma for me. Based upon his rambling accusations (addressed below), it became blatantly apparent that there was one Christmas gift which would be of utmost benefit for Mr. Hoffman: A quality pair of reading glasses, as he obviously had extreme difficulty in attempting to determine what I actually wrote.

Ice cream gunman: Story was not funny

John Munford’s account of a clerk at Bruster’s Ice Cream facing an angry customer wielding a semi-automatic weapon was disturbing on many levels.

Water story: Bottom line must be conservation

Here’s a response to your article about “Candidates face off at Wednesday forum” [The Citizen, Dec. 14, 2007]:

We have a water problem here in Georgia and all but one of the candidates for the 72nd district seat appear to have questionable ideas about how to solve it. This became evident in review of the statements they made at the recent Wednesday forum.

Redistricting facilitator ‘had his own agenda’

To those of you involved with the redistricting process, below is a letter which was sent to Governor Sonny Perdue and copied to Dr. DeCotis and each Board of Education member. Hopefully it sums up our situation and some positive feedback will result.

Illegal hunting still happening on Ebenezer Church Rd.; where is the law?

For more than a year now I have been begging the marshal’s office and the Sheriff’s Department to enforce Ordinance No. 94-01 adopted on Feb. 24, 1994.

Kevin Madden (D): Against TDK Boulevard Extension, for district voting

While the Democratic candidate, Kevin Madden, was traveling to Poland to create business for his PTC air cargo company and contribute to the Fayette County economy and tax base, the three Republican aspirants to the Georgia state House 72 seat were having their letters printed in your paper.

Matt Ramsey (R): Lifelong resident has experience, temperament for job

Over these last few weeks, I have had the great privilege of speaking with hundreds of my fellow Fayette County residents about the issues important to our community.

Steve Brown (R): Intend to analyze all legislation through ‘conservative lens’

At the outset, let me thank all of the homeowner association presidents and community leaders who have lent their support to my campaign for Ga. House District 72.

Ramsey is man of faith, family man who will be on side of working people

During my 50 years in the aviation industry, I have had the opportunity to work with many elected officials at the local, state and federal levels. I’ve observed many politicians that simply did not do it for the right reasons.

F’ville Mayor Steele is supporting Ramsey

As we approach the special election to fill the House District 72 seat that was so ably filled by our friend Dan Lakly for so many years, I would like to offer my unqualified support for Republican Matt Ramsey.
