School workers deserve perk of choosing their kids’ schools

At a time when the redistricting issue is creating unease in our county, the front page article about the perk teachers and employees of Fayette County Board of Education have in choosing the school for their children was inappropriate and a low blow and a discourtesy to teachers and employees of our schools.

They absolutely deserve such a perk, including the employees who live outside Fayette. That wasn’t even newsworthy, Citizen.

I pay taxes here and get no such perks. I think the condesending way that Sweat has acted towards people ...begging... to send their kids to another school for very ...valid..reasons has people seeing red. Knowing that he sends his where he wants to, and everyone else, can just 'eat cake'. That is so unprofesional. And look at his salery! That is perk enough in my book.

Does anyone know why teachers and employees can pick and choose their child's school?

Sounds pretty elitist to me. I for one support school vouchers so everyone can have that opportunity.

Why should out of county employees get to send their children outside their county district?

It doesn't matter whether they should or shouldn't because state law allows employees to bring their children to the school where they work. If employees who live outside the county have that right, shouldn't employees who live inside the county and pay taxes? What about employees who aren't located at schools? Is it fair to exclude them? Should a lunchroom worker or a bus driver who lives outside the county keep that right, but a teacher who is also a resident but promoted to a county office position lose it? What about maintenance workers who work at all schools? Should the kid have to move if the parent transfers? Gets a promotion? What is elitist about that? Just wondering...
