MHS Chiefs need a coaching upgrade

I attended my first McIntosh Chiefs varsity football game this past Friday (9/21). I do not claim to be an expert on high school football coaching, but I have had many years of bleacher and armchair coaching while watching many other high schools, colleges and professional teams.

From my perception, and many of the others sitting around me, many of the players playing in the game were playing both offense and defense with many other players on the sideline ready and hoping, able to play.

I can understand that some athletes are capable of playing dual positions, but being on a football team and playing on the field, contributing to the “team” are the dreams of many boys and they should participate to some extent after enduring all of the practices.

Additionally, some of the formations and communication methods appeared to be somewhat ancient. The head coach and the assistant coaches didn’t show any signs of enthusiasm, which was reflected by the players and team atmosphere.

Is this really what we want our local high school athletes to experience?

Is the head coach or the school board recruiting the head coach to blame for this? There have to be many coaches available that can coach the high school athletes and contribute to a team atmosphere that will contribute toward success, both on and off the field.

Just some of my observations and I am sure there are many others out there that will disagree with me, but I am sure there are many other that will also agree with me. It would be good to see the “team” effort back in one of our local teams.

Are you kidding me??? It sounds to me as if you are crying "It's not fair that every kid doesn't get a chance." This is high school; men here. Your 'ideas' will make wussy’s out of these men. Like I tell my own kids: Your right, it’s not fair as life is not fair. The only fair in life is going on at the fairgrounds right now and it will be gone soon. Grow some tough skin and stop whining.
The principal at this school doesn’t put much into the athletic programs; she is more concerned with high SAT scores and academics. I’m not saying this is a bad thing. It is what it is, period.
Your whining makes me want to diaper you! I hope you do not voice your opinion in front of your child as you will be diapering him with your words!

Hey Gary, why don't you get some diapers from some of the other parents in Peachtree City. I here too much complaining about their sons/daughters play times with this school and other sports offered in Peachtree City. Maybe your child should go play recreaction ball somewhere. I'm sure he'll be a stand out there.
Hi there, I know of a diaper outlet in Fayetteville. Maybe Gary should go there.

You really musta just moved here. Last year was my 8th year of Mc-ball. Didn't anyone warn you?
I haven't been this year but they obviously must be much improved if they have even won 1 game much less been in a showing. Congrats to the staff & team.
I still don't know why if they are a "soccer" school, they just havn't always just kicked the FG. From like the 50.

and this year it shows. I'm not a McIntosh fan and am not connectied to the program in any way. I'm actually a Sandy Creek fan. I will however give credit where credit is due. McIntosh has taken big strides in improving their program. I believe this is their Coaches second year at McIntosh, someone corect me if I'm wrong. He said when he came in it would take time to turn things around. I think he's turned a corner. The Cheifs have been in EVERY game they have played this year.

This is High School Football in Georgia, no more rec ball. The team is in place to win, not make all the players feel good. In order to win, you have to put your best athletes on the field, sometimes that means playing them both ways.

If you wanted to see enthusiasm you should have been at the McIntosh - Sandy Creek game, you'd be singing a different tune. I say KUDOS to the McIntosh Coach!

I am sorry I was so surprised that such rich kids parents can not afford speakers on the other side so I could even hear what is going on. When Sandy Creek Band played not one person from McIntosh clapped for them. Honestly what are they teaching their kids. I was not impressed with the coaching staff- parents showed up at the last second before the game. Believe me I much rather go to Sandy Creek High School and not be rude and not clap for the Marching Band. Again, I say where are the values???????????? It did not matter to me who won- to me Sandy Creek High School won, because myself and other parents refuse to stoop to their level and not clap. The person announcing the football game, oh he sound so excited.(not) I find it sad that such goes on and parents act so rude. Hey, but they have golf carts, etc. Don't you want your kid to not know reality? I find it sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate to dignify bpr's resentful and immature post with any response. But it is simply incorrect to say that no McIntosh fans applauded the Sandy Creek band. I was there; I clapped; many other people did too.

As for the McIntosh football team, it will never out-athlete many other teams but the effort has been there and this year the execution is far better. Props to all involved.

We are moving in the area in about 2 months, it seems PTC folks (some) are not happy people. Susieq lets everyone have it if they don't see things the way she does, and when I read what others say they complain alot. Then I keep on reading and there's more people complaining all the time about something. I am just looking at the area and where to move. Are you people happy in PTC?

Lilly:

Due to a job transfer, my wife and I moved to Peachtree City 17 months ago from southern California. For several years prior to our move, I made regular business trips here and fell in love with the natural beauty of the community. Compared to California, we have found the residents to be friendly, polite, and helpful.

We found this website in the weeks prior to our move and used the information to make us a bit more familiar with the community. While I find "the regulars" on this site to be informative and amusing, I have also found some of the comments negative and disturbing. I've learned that I cannot judge PTC or the Fayette county area by the more cynical participants on this site.

Lilly, use discernment as you read these posts, make good friends here after your arrival, and judge the community based on your "in person" experience. Life in PTC will be what you make of it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Have a good and safe move to Georgia.

I wouldn't advise you to move anywhere on the basis of the type people who blog as this bunch on here do! They are certainly not typical of the average citizen here!
They have little to do, are self centered, are NOT open-minded--would vote for a yellow dog, and want someone else to pay the taxes. Most of us don't. Of course I am an exception as there always is at least 2%! Most here are like me except some are rather radical. Watch and see if they jump on this comment and be very critical!

I am a happy person, thanks for information.

Finally, I get a little recognition. Thanks, Lilly.

Why are you asking if people are happy in PTC? Can't you read?

Move on down. Maybe you and bpr can be friends.

Again, thanks for the recognition. LOL

I did not post a resentful and immature post about the band. I did not hear anyone clapping. If you did thank you- but it must have been very few. We need to have respect for everyone.

Submitted by susieq on Wed, 10/24/2007 - 1:12pm.

bpr, why don't you practice what you preach?

You need to show a little respect for rich kids' parents and people who own golf carts.

I do eveyday I walk on the golf paths and the kids run over me. By the way my kid is rich also, we choose to live a different life than you do, I teach him respect. Yesterday two people were complaining about kids and golf carts and how they just about run over them. Where were you then? I am not the only one complaining.

I know I do not. I enjoy the bands playing, etc, but I don't sit and watch the bands. When I was in High School back in the day, we never clapped for the other teams band. Don't take it so personally.

I watch the real talent that will stay with them a life time. Football doesn't- how many guy on the football team use their skills in life, or actually learn something. That comment was very rude, that you go get a hot dog, these kids work just as hard as your football players, and yes I clap for the football players because I know about respect and how hard they work and need my support. By the way my son is in the band. He is a very smart guy in school and loves what he does in the band regardless of what some rude parents think? I have taught him to believe in himself. Respect could help alot in Fayette County mostly in PTC.

Some of us love listening to the local school bands. In the Woodcreek sub. my friends and I get a free concert everytime the Starrs Mill band is practicing and we love it.

It's only polite to clap at the end of a performance, you must not be a band parent.

or something else. I'm mainly talking about when I was a student, I understand the students not giving a rip about the other teams band.

As a proud alum of the Sandy Creek Marching Patriots, I looked forward to seeing how other bands performed, what we both did differently, etc. It takes some culture to be able to appreciate what the teens out on the field are doing during halftime. Some people look at it like a waste of time and their tax money. However, these kids put as much, sometimes more, energy/time/commitment to their activity than the football players. At least they did 1-5 years ago.

So McDonoughDawg, you're not the only person grabbing a snack during halftime, but I would like to express my gratitude towards those non-band parents that stay to watch the bands.

Also, Thank you to those of you who actually clap after each of the bands perform. It doesn't matter what school these kids are from, they all put in a lot of work to stage a show for your entertainment.

To those who visit concessions, please rethink your actions and stay to watch the "real show" during halftime

It's not like I sit and boo the other bands, but I can tell you back in the late 70's early 80's that exactly what they did at most of the schools in the Southern Crescent. I went to Morrow, we regularly played Fayette County, Newnan, Griffin, Lagrange, RE LEE (talk about a blast from the past). Visiting bands were booed by the students of the other schools. And Morrow had one of the better bands in the area, by far. I never heard Band Parents fretting over it.

I guess it's not PC anymore to say anything about anybody. Gee...

Carry on..

Submitted by Daniel Ross on Fri, 09/28/2007 - 9:15am.

I don't mind when people aren't PC. I just have strong opinions when it comes to some aspects of life, and band just happens to be one of them.

I'm sure back in the 70s and 80s things were different.

However, whenever Sandy Creek won a really popular away game against a rival (i.e. Creekside, Whitewater, etc) all the football players, cheerleaders, and band students had to ride back to school on a hot school bus with their windows up for fear of having rocks thrown at them.

You may be asking what does this have to do with political correctness. Well, it's one thing to boo the band from the stands, but it's another to attack them physically.

Thank you McDonoughDawg for not booing the other bands, but next game, check them out. They might be better than your school's band.

Until this year when I now have a daughter in band, I had no idea the time and effort that is required. I should have known that this is Fayette County and it's always a BIG commitment to excellence, whether that's Boy Scouts, Soccer/Team Sports, Science Club, etc.Smiling I've learned a newfound appreciation and respect for band members and everyone associated with schools having bands. It's quite a serious commitment and requires WORK. Sounds like a great thing for youth to get involved in to me!

From personal experience I've seen members 'drop in their tracks' from intense practices and competition. Marching band is a very physical activity. I'm hoping my daughters choose the band. I'm trying to steer them away from being a cheerleader. There's far more physical activity involved in being a cheerleader. Eye-wink

Daniel,
I for one do not have a kid in a band, my boys are on the field playing football. However, I have always enjoyed the halftime performances by the many bands in and out of our county. For those that have not noticed, these band players practice just as much as the football players and they only ask for 15 minutes of your time.

I applaud all the bands in the county for your hard work and dedication!

P.S. The concession stand lines are smaller after the 3rd quarter starts anyway.

Submitted by Daniel Ross on Thu, 09/27/2007 - 9:47pm.

Thank you for your support of Fayette County's band programs.

Be sure to visit the concession stands before the bands return from halftime because most are given third quarter to get food/drink from the concessions area and it clogs up fast.
