The Citizen Sports Blitz visits Velocity’s open house
Mike and Kevin took in the open house at Velocity Sports Performance in Peachtree City on Sunday, Dec. 16.
State-ranked Westlake wallops WhitewaterWhat a long, miserable night it was for Whitewater’s basketball teams. The eighth-ranked Westlake Lady Lions handed the Lady Wildcats their worst loss of the season, 46-9, and the second-ranked Westlake Lions completed the sweep with a 73-35 victory over the overmatched Wildcats Friday in Region 2-AAAA action in Fayetteville. Landmark and Mercy players all over All-Region 5-A teamThe Region 5-A coaches recently voted on the all-region team and 13 Landmark Christian players and eight players from Our Lady of Mercy were named to the team. McIntosh boys win Georgia Tech 2007 Turkey ShootoutA group of 15 McIntosh Lacrosse players competed in this year’s turkey shootout at Georgia Tech. This tournament is hosted annually by the Georgia Tech lacrosse team. There were 16 teams mostly from local area high schools and one team from South Carolina. The format is 7 vs 7, which is a modification of the normal 10 vs 10 for normal regulation play. Also the field is reduced in size by 30 percent, which makes the pace of the games even faster than the normal game already known as the fastest game on 2 feet. Velocity hosts star-studded open house this SundayVelocity Sports Performance in Peachtree City will host an open house on Sunday, Dec. 16 from 2-4 p.m. In addition to Velocity training demonstrations and “mini” training sessions, there will be an inflatable obstacle course and moon bouncer, autographs and photos with professional athletes, including Johnny Estrada, catcher for the New York Mets. Also appearing at the open house will be Jaybriel Holbrook, a professional football player with the Austin Wranglers, Liam Banks, a professional lacrosse player with the San Francisco Dragons, and elite triathlete April Gellatly. SCAT has breakout performances at state championshipsPeachtree City’s Southern Crescent Aquatic Team competed at the Georgia Senior State Championships December 7th-9th held at the Georgia Tech Olympic Pool. East Coweta team takes second at Carrollton meetThe East Coweta swimming Indians competed at the Carrollton eigth annual High School Invitational on November 30th and December 1st. The progress of the team was incredible. The Indians had 17 individual swimmers who swam their fastest races at this meet. Phoebe Paredes, freshman, dropped the most time with 13.64 seconds. Mailet Aguirie dropped 10.25 seconds. Starr’s Mill takes first place at Carrollton InvitationalBoth the Starr’s Mill men’s and women’s swim teams placed first at the Carrollton Holiday Invitational held last weekend at the Carrollton Natatorium. Michael Boylan: Story of little hunter is just sad“Merrit, Tre Merritt To the tune of “Davy Crockett” The story of five-year-old Tre Merritt, a descendant of Davy Crockett, killing a 445-pound black bear lit up the internet on Tuesday. There were stories about the tiny hunter on both ESPN.com and Drudge Report, as well as video clips of little Merritt holding a rifle and driving an ATV. Creek sweeps Cartersville in hoops actionBy the end of the third quarter Tuesday against Cartersville, the Sandy Creek Patriots were down 43-35 and appeared to be on the verge of losing their Region 6-AAA opener. Blue Devils win Chick-fil-A Bowl youth football championshipThe Fayette County Blue Devils won the 140-Pound GYFC/UYFC Chick-fil-A Bowl youth football championship on Saturday, defeating Gresham Park 20-14. Local women urged to kick off the new year with weight loss challengeLast year, Fit 4 A New Life, a fitness studio in Fayetteville for women, launched a weight loss challenge. The challenge started Jan.1, 2007, and lasted until April 1, 2007, and featured 150 participants looking to learn about good nutrition and fitness while shedding some pounds. Roughly 120 people finished the four-month program and lost a combined total of 360 pounds. The most one person lost in the challenge was 40 pounds. Local wrestlers give good showing at tournamentsUnion Grove High School hosted the annual South Metro Wrestling tournament last Friday and Saturday and McIntosh and Fayette County cracked the top 10. The Chiefs placed third overall with 166.50 points, while the Tigers took eighth with 123 points. Sandy Creek placed 12th (101), Whitewater placed 13th (93.5) and Starr’s Mill placed 16th (75.50). Tiger teams swept and Panthers upset Chiefs in busy weekendIt was a tough weekend overall for the local basketball teams. The Fayette boys and girls dropped both games against Westlake. Whitewater swim teams making a splash in young seasonThe Whitewater swim team has made excellent showings at the three meets thus far with many swimmers already qualifying for the state meet in various events. Results are as follows: Starr's Mill and McIntosh split basketball gamesStarr’s Mill entered Friday night’s clash with Region 2-AAAA rival McIntosh seeking its first win of the season. It got it, holding off McIntosh in the final seconds for a 52-51 victory in Peachtree City. Westlake sweeps Fayette County at homeThose who follow region 2-AAAA basketball would tell you that Westlake and Fayette County's boys and girls basketball teams are the best teams in the region. Tonight's games would prove them right. Both games were epic battles and when all was said and done Westlake emerged victorious. McIntosh men’s swim team wins at Woodward Academy dual meetThe McIntosh High School men swimmers defeated The Woodward Academy men’s team by a narrow margin at a duel meet last week at Woodward. The overall team victory went to Woodward based on their stronger women’s results, including diving. McIntosh wrestlers make tournament history in New YorkThe McIntosh wrestling team traveled to New York last weekend and came home as tournament champions. The team competed in the 25th Annual Tony Carlucci Invitational in Port Chester, NY and defeated the host and regionally ranked Port Chester High School by a final score of 226 to 208. Harrison High School, a regional top 10 team finished in third with a score of 165. Next Stop for PTC Flash Youth XC Team: KansasWhile most cross country teams have wrapped up their season, the PTC Flash Youth Cross Country Team continues to practice in the dark, cold, and windy conditions. Why? Simple. Nine of their twelve athletes will be competing on December 8th in the USATF Junior Olympic National Championship in Lawrence, Kansas. For those nine, getting there was no easy feat. Sweeps for Chiefs and Tigers in region games on TuesdayAll the basketball teams that were in action on Tuesday night faced region opponents and several teams either swept or got swept. Registration for winter programs openRegistration has just started for all of the Winter Programs within the Fayette County Recreation Department. There a variety of sports programs being offered. Tour de Georgia skipping Fayette this yearThe route for the 2008 Tour de Georgia was announced Wednesday morning and it doesn't appear to be going through Fayette County. Peachtree City had the official start of the race last year and Fayetteville was a stage start for the two years prior to that. McIntosh takes two from Whitewater in basketballThe McIntosh Chiefs saved their best game of the year thus far for one of their biggest crosstown rivals, Whitewater. Local wrestling teams start the season with winsThe Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats began the season by racking up victories over Pace Academy at the Dunwoody Wrestling Tournament and at home on Tuesday against Banneker High School. It was the OLM veterans that provided the power in these two very close wins. Rivalries and region match-ups over competitive weekendThe basketball action on Friday and Saturday saw not only some great region matchups, but also some good local rivalries. |
