Rivalries and region match-ups over competitive weekend

The basketball action on Friday and Saturday saw not only some great region matchups, but also some good local rivalries.

Our Lady of Mercy hosted Whitewater on Friday. The Whitewater girls won 48-40 and were led by 18 points from Jackie Gittins, who hit five three-pointers in the game. The Lady Wildcats led by as many as 20 in the third quarter but Mercy fought back in the fourth quarter to narrow the margin. The Lady Bobcats were led by 12 points from Camille Thompson and nine from Kelly Tolcher.

Mercy (1-2) bounced back on Saturday and defeated Atlanta International 58-50 for their first win of the season. Whitewater’s girls (4-3) defeated Banneker 49-30 on Saturday. They were led by 16 points from Kait Loewecke, 11 points from Gittins, eight points and 12 rebounds from Madeline Arnall and 10 rebounds from Tori Murray.

The Our Lady of Mercy boys (3-0) defeated Whitewater for the first time in school history. Whitewater (1-4) led by as many as 10, 25-15 in the second quarter. But Dominique McDermott sank two free throws to hand Mercy (2-0) its first lead of the game, 38-36, with 1:56 left in the third quarter.

Whitewater came back and pulled to within one, 44-43, on a fadeaway 3-pointer by Kody Hastings with 5:26 remaining in the fourth quarter, but that’s as close as the Wildcats would get.
Mercy’s Nnamdi Moh and Richie Obiora were a lethal combination in the final five minutes, scoring eight and six points, respectively. Moh led all scorers with 24 points, and Obiora had 16.

Jamal Washington scored 14 points to lead Whitewater (1-4). Justin Smith and Hastings both scored 10 for the Wildcats.

Mercy followed up Friday’s win with a 64-47 victory over Atlanta International.

Fayette County took on Creekside on Friday. The Lady Tigers continued their dominance by beating the Lady Seminoles 65-26. Junior Tessah Holt scored 15 points, while junior Chasity Welch added 11 points and sophomore Anna Onyeuku scored 10 points. Fayette County topped Starr’s Mill 55-15 on Saturday. A 31-12 halftime lead stretched out to a 47-15 lead at the end of the third quarter and the Lady Tigers (5-1) kept Starr’s Mill (1-1) off the scoreboard in the fourth quarter. Fayette County was led by 14 points from Holt and nine points from Welch.

Down 32-27 at the half and outscoring the Seminoles 45-40 in second half, the Tigers forced an overtime and scored two points to win 74-72 over Creekside. Noel Johnson led Fayette County with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Cuincy Carruthers added 18, Terrance Turner added 14 points and 14 rebounds and Brandon Boykin chipped in 12 points.

On Saturday, Fayette took on Starr’s Mill. The Tigers had a 31-24 lead at the half but a 17-0 run to start the third quarter put Fayette County (5-1) firmly in charge. Johnson had 14 points and five rebounds in the win, while Carruthers added 14 points, three steals and three assists and Cody Simmons chipped in 13 points. Starr’s Mill (0-3) was led by nine points from Andrew Davis.

McIntosh had two region games this weekend.
The Lady Chiefs (1-3) lost two close games. They fell to Banneker 36-33 on Friday with Erin Justice leading the team in scoring with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Olivia Tucker had six points and 10 rebounds. On Saturday, McIntosh lost to Creekside 41-39. Justice had 14 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals, while Tucker chipped in 11 points, two rebounds and four steals.

The boys (1-3) defeated Banneker 73-57 on Friday and fell to Creekside 53-52 on Saturday.

Landmark Christian’s girls (5-1) picked up two more wins over the weekend, defeating Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy 45-44 on Friday and beating Fellowship Christian 51-26 on Saturday. The Landmark boys (3-2) split in their games, falling to SACA 52-36 on Friday but defeating Fellowship 58-45 on Saturday.

Sandy Creek’s boys (2-2) took on North Clayton at Philips Arena on Saturday and lost 87-85. Blake Brewer led the team with 36 points and 11 rebounds, while Malcolm Jackson added 16 points and nine rebounds and Darius Harris chipped in 10 points.
