What a long, miserable night it was for Whitewater’s basketball teams.

The eighth-ranked Westlake Lady Lions handed the Lady Wildcats their worst loss of the season, 46-9, and the second-ranked Westlake Lions completed the sweep with a 73-35 victory over the overmatched Wildcats Friday in Region 2-AAAA action in Fayetteville.

The boys game was essentially over by halftime, with Westlake holding a commanding 38-15 lead.

Raymond Willis, an Oklahoma signee, carried Westlake in the first half, scoring 15 of his game-high 19 points. Willis consistently took the ball to the rim, using his height (6-6), reach and quickness to score easily against Whitewater.

An 11-2 Westlake run to open the third quarter was an ominous sign of things to come for the Wildcats. Westlake continued to pile on the points in the second half, leading by as many as 41 points late in the fourth quarter.

Westlake had two players score in double figures, Willis and Gideon Gamble (11 points).

Whitewater's leading scorers were Jamal Washington (15 points) and Tom Bohrer (nine).

The girls game was close for a quarter; Westlake held a 13-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

By the end of the first half, Westlake’s lead had reached double digits, 24-4.

The Lady Lions went on to outscore Whitewater 22-5 the rest of the way. Westlake’s size — it deployed two players who are taller than 6 feet, Aarika Howard (6-2) and Tamika Willis (6-1) — speed and aggressiveness were too much for Whitewater.

Westlake’s immense depth also played a significant role in the victory; eleven different players scored for the Lady Lions, who were led by Tameka Willis’ nine points.

Katie McCreary, Kelsey Bowman, Kait Loewecke and Tori Murray each scored two points to lead Whitewater.
