A group of 15 McIntosh Lacrosse players competed in this year’s turkey shootout at Georgia Tech. This tournament is hosted annually by the Georgia Tech lacrosse team. There were 16 teams mostly from local area high schools and one team from South Carolina. The format is 7 vs 7, which is a modification of the normal 10 vs 10 for normal regulation play. Also the field is reduced in size by 30 percent, which makes the pace of the games even faster than the normal game already known as the fastest game on 2 feet.

The team named the Gizzards was organized and coached by Sam DeRosa and Joe Krehel assisted. The boys played 3 games each day and ended with a record of 5-1, with victories over Decatur, Walton, Wesleyan, Pope and Harrison and the one loss to Alpharetta.

The Gizzards racked up a total of 74 points over the weekend with strong performances from all 15 players. The goal tally over the two days was Brennan Ott 17; Zack Ward 12; Nicco DeRosa 10; JD Krehel 8; Caleb Benson 8; Jack Bornhofen 7; DJ Ward 4; Cam Elward 4; Garrett Lee 2; and David Bexley 2.

Defensively, both goalies, Andrew Huffman and Kevin Bennett, put in outstanding performances, making numerous saves, with many of them in clutch situations. Rounding out the defense, the goalies had great support from Nathan DeRosa, Andy Milani, Ben Simms and David Bexley. All four defensemen were rock-solid, constantly rotating their positions and shutting down the opponents attack especially in man down situations.

Congratulations to the McIntosh High School Lacrosse team on their 2007 GA Tech Turkey Shootout Championship. This team finished 4th in the state playoffs last year and will be one of the favorites to win the Georgia State Lacrosse Championship this year.

If you haven't taken the time to go to one of their games, I would encourge you to....lacrosse is the fsstest growing sport in Georgia High Schools and it is a fast pace and excting spectator sport. Plus you will see one of the premier teams in the state as well as several players who will continue their lacrosse into college.
