The Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats began the season by racking up victories over Pace Academy at the Dunwoody Wrestling Tournament and at home on Tuesday against Banneker High School. It was the OLM veterans that provided the power in these two very close wins.

At Dunwoody, senior Patrick Silloway (Heavy weight) recorded a 4-1 performance with two pins. Senior Will Simmons (215 lbs) went 2-0 with one pin and junior Clint Ford (125 lbs) 3-2 with two pins. In the Pace Academy match when the wrestling was complete, the team scores were equal. Based on tie-breaker rules, the Bobcats were awarded one team point for scoring more pins than the Pace Academy Knights and won 25-24.

On Tuesday, OLM scored another big win over Banneker High School Trojans. With the team scored tied after 13 weight class matches, it came down to the final Heavyweight bout to decide the outcome. The Knights scored first with a takedown but the Bobcats’ Silloway hit an explosive reversal move and pinned his opponent sealing a 30-24 OLM victory. Other winning Bobcat wrestlers that match were: Ford, junior Matt Fitzgerald (140), freshman Wayne Holt (171) and Simmons, who remains undefeated for the year.

Fayette County went 4-1 at the Bear Duals at Houston County High School on Saturday. The Tigers placed third, going 4-1 on the day.

Sam Law went 5-0, while Matt McGlory, Ali Khan and Austin Vorwald each won four games.

Fayette hosted Newton and Miller Grove yesterday after the paper went to press.

The McIntosh wrestling team kicked off the 2007-08 season by sweeping all three opponents in a quad meet at McIntosh last Tuesday night. In the opening match the Chiefs beat Troup 59 to 18 and then handily took care of Riverdale with a 60 -24 win. In the night cap McIntosh beat a tough Lovejoy squad 48 to 29.

Afterwards Coach Nick Bellantoni said, “Overall I am happy with our results tonight. I was real happy with taking the matches we did against Troup and Lovejoy. We had a few wrestlers compete really well but we also had way too much inconsistency..”
The Chiefs were led by seven wrestlers winning all three of their matches; team captains Richard Hughes (130), Carl Scheumann (152) and Matt Carroll (215), senior Jarrod Chamblee (112), sophomores Ricky Oskey (145) and Sean Carney (275), as well as Erik Willanzheimer (189) Jessy Toscano (140) Cory Brandt (171) and Jacob Worthington (189).

Oskey wrestled perhaps the most exciting match of the night against his Troup High School opponent. The two wrestlers were tied late in the third period when Oskey threw his opponent to his back and won in a sudden and decisive pin.
Sophomore Trent Shallow finished the night with two wins and one loss as did sophomore Matthew Perry, who was competing in his first varsity competition. Freshman Clayton Prudeaux (125) finished the night with one win and two losses as did Jim Murrell (135). Also competing for the Chiefs were Gabby Perez (171) and Colin Brandt (160).
