Fayette County and Sandy Creek girls play their second round games tomorrow

Fayette County Lady Tigers (23-5) vs. Bainbridge Lady Bearcats (18-8), Wednesday night, 7 p.m.

The Lady Tigers marched into the Sweet 16 of the Class AAAA tournament by defeating Forest Park 49-22. Sophomore Anma Onyeuku led Fayette County with 16 points and nine rebounds, while senior Kristene Walker added 15 points and junior Tessah Holt chipped in six points and seven assists.

Whitewater High School produced another state champion in wrestling. Chase Penland won the 160-pound weight class in this year’s Class AAAA state wrestling meet. The school got back-to-back state titles from Jordan Strain in 2006 and 2007, while Jacob Williamson won a state title last year.

Landmark girls win region title, Sandy Creek teams come up short

Landmark Christian’s Lady War Eagles edged out Southwest Atlanta Christian 61-59 to capture the region 5-A championship Saturday night. Tiffany Hall scored 16 points for Landmark, while teammate Diamond Hunnicutt chipped in 15 points. The Lady War Eagles will host a Class A playoff game next Saturday.
