The East Coweta Indians and Northgate Vikings were on the opposite ends of one-run games in their season openers this week.

The Fayette County Lady Tigers are now two steps away from playing for the first state title in basketball in school history.

The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots moved closer to playing for a state title Wednesday, defeating Gainesville 53-49 on the road in overtime.

The Northgate Lady Vikings and East Coweta Lady Indians made the state playoffs, but both suffered the same fate last week, losing in the first round.

It was a long bus ride to and from the game at Thomas County Central, but spirits were high as the Fayette County Tigers advanced to the Elite Eight in Class AAAA with a 69-65 win.

The Patriots' game against Flowery Branch on Tuesday night was filled with momentum changing runs and lead changes galore, but in the end free throws were what gave Flowery Branch the win. The Falcons drained eight straight free throws at the end of the game to win 71-65.

Fayette County Lady Tigers (23-5) vs. Bainbridge Lady Bearcats (18-8), Wednesday night, 7 p.m.

The Lady Tigers marched into the Sweet 16 of the Class AAAA tournament by defeating Forest Park 49-22. Sophomore Anma Onyeuku led Fayette County with 16 points and nine rebounds, while senior Kristene Walker added 15 points and junior Tessah Holt chipped in six points and seven assists.

Whitewater High School produced another state champion in wrestling. Chase Penland won the 160-pound weight class in this year’s Class AAAA state wrestling meet. The school got back-to-back state titles from Jordan Strain in 2006 and 2007, while Jacob Williamson won a state title last year.

Recreational youth sports aren’t just good for athletes. The parents of the youngsters can often find a friendship or two in the program. TC Lewis and Sammy Black found business partners in each other.

The Blue Devils are the Peachtree City Youth Basketball Association’s 3rd Grade Champions.

Danny Cronic, one of the most successful coaches in Coweta County history, announced Tuesday that he has decided to retire as head football coach of the East Coweta Indians.

In the Class AAAA state meet, Whitewater placed fifth, Fayette County placed sixth, McIntosh placed 18th and Starr’s Mill placed 38th. Local wrestlers who placed in the top six of their weight class were:

The completed brackets and final standings are not available, as of yet, but two local wrestlers have achieved individual state titles in their respective weight classes and GHSA classifications.

Fayette County's boys and girls and Sandy Creek's boys and girls won their games in the opening round of the state basketball playoffs. They now move on to the second round, which starts with the boys' games on Tuesday and the girls' games on Wednesday.

The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots jumped out to a 6-0 lead in their game against the Stephens County Lady Indians and never looked back. Sandy Creek led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and 32-15 at the half, as Kenneshia Rich hit three of her four three-pointers in the second quarter.

A winless playoff record (0-6) had been the biggest blemish on the resume of Fayette County boys basketball coach Andre Flynn.

Coweta County is well represented in the Class AAAAA and AAAA state tournaments, which started Wednesday at at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth.

One week after signing a Letter of Intent with the University of Florida, Christian Taylor competed in the Chick-fil-A Invitational at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and won the long and triple jumps with marks of 24-09.75 and 50-05.25, respectively.

Starr’s Mill’s girls, who are ranked No. 1 in the AAAA pre-season poll, kicked off their 2008 campaign with a 2-0 win over Grayson. The Lady Panthers played at Walton last night after the paper went to press.

Class AAAA - Boys

Fayette County Tigers (19-9, 15-4 region) vs. Upson Lee Knights (18-7, 10-2 region), Friday, Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m.

Fayette County won the team portion of the Area 2-AAAA wrestling championship, with Whitewater taking third place, McIntosh finishing in fourth place and Starr’s Mill taking sixth.

Landmark Christian’s Lady War Eagles edged out Southwest Atlanta Christian 61-59 to capture the region 5-A championship Saturday night. Tiffany Hall scored 16 points for Landmark, while teammate Diamond Hunnicutt chipped in 15 points. The Lady War Eagles will host a Class A playoff game next Saturday.
