The writers’ strike recently ended, but no matter who the writer, perhaps none could have written a better ending for the Fayette County Lady Tigers, who defeated the third-ranked Westlake Lady Lions 49-34 to win the Region 2-AAAA championship for the second straight season and their fourth region title in five years Saturday at Fayette County High School.

Sandy Creek’s Lady Patriots advanced to the 6-AAA final by defeating Central Carroll 43-31 . They will play Carrollton at 6 p.m. at Haralson County High School. The boys will also play in the 6-AAA championship game, facing Cartersville at 7:30 p.m. at Haralson County High School. The boys beat Carrollton 52-47 in the region semi-final.

Westlake's boys and girls have gotten the upper hand on Fayette County during both regular season match-ups, but the Lady Tigers and Tigers will hope that the third time is the charm tonight.

Fayette County did not look their best in the first half and the Creekside Seminoles led at the end of the first (17-13) and second quarters (33-28). Creekside still had the lead at the end of the third quarter, but Fayette had come alive, stealing the lead at several points and scoring 18 points.

Fayette County’s girls jumped out to a 15-3 lead by the end of the first quarter, but a lackluster second half let Woodward Academy climb back into the game. The Lady Tigers led 19-12 at the half and 29-21 at the end of the third quarter, but the Lady War Eagles kept chipping away at the lead, getting it down to one point with just under 30 second left.

By the end of the first round of the Region 2-AAAA basketball tournament Wednesday, only one local team was left standing, the Fayette County Lady Tigers, who sealed a spot in the state playoffs with a 56-37 victory over the Creekside Lady Seminoles at Fayette County High School.

The Fayette County Tigers made a statement with their playoff-clinching 69-35 victory over Woodward Academy in the opening round of the Region 2-AAAA tournament Tuesday — they are a force to be reckoned with.

The Whitewater Wildcats put quite a scare into the top-ranked Westlake Lions on Tuesday, hanging around long enough to possibly pull off an upset.

The Starr’s Mill Panthers played the Creekside Seminoles close for almost the entire first half of their game this evening, but Creekside went on a tear in the third quarter, scoring 11 points in one minute during one outburst, and won the game easily, 69-47.

The McIntosh Chiefs led the Banneker Trojans at the end of the first and second quarter of their region tournament game on Tuesday, but Banneker seized a two point lead by the end of the third quarter and walked away with the win.

With only six swimmers, The suprising Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers brought home the third place trophy from the AAAA state High School Swim Meet held Saturday at Westminster. This marks the highest finish in school history.

After five long months of twice-weekly practices, Team Reality is getting ready to start competing. Seven local climbers are putting the finishing touches on their climbing skills, making final preparations for upcoming rock climbing competitions. The season opener will be held at Adrenaline Climbing in Suwanee, Ga., on Feb. 23.

Fayette County’s wrestling team competed in five matches this past weekend and went 4-1. The Tigers lost to Henry County 40-30, but defeated Mundy’s Mill 71-6, Lowndes 46-30, North Forsyth, 44-27 and Southwest DeKalb 49-20.

Caitlin Beale, senior defender at Whitewater High School has signed a scholarship to continue playing soccer at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

The games were close, each with their own share of lead changes, momentum swings and drama, but when all was said and done Whitewater’s two varsity basketball teams emerged victorious.

Katie Schwartz, a senior at Whitewater High School, recently signed a letter of intent to attend and play soccer for Kennesaw State University.

Landmark Christian's Jimmy Eden signed a national letter of intent last Wednesday to attend and play football for Liberty University.

The unranked McIntosh Chiefs were on the verge Friday of upsetting the state’s top-ranked team, the Westlake Lions, and handing them their first Region 2-AAAA loss of the season.

Fayette County played host to Whitewater on Friday night and dominated their county rivals.

The girls game featured a very low scoring first half with the Lady Tigers leading 11-8 at the break. The Fayette County offense picked things up in the second half and won 40-17. The Lady Tigers defense was the star of the game holding Whitewater scoreless for two straight quarters.
