Fayette County’s girls jumped out to a 15-3 lead by the end of the first quarter, but a lackluster second half let Woodward Academy climb back into the game. The Lady Tigers led 19-12 at the half and 29-21 at the end of the third quarter, but the Lady War Eagles kept chipping away at the lead, getting it down to one point with just under 30 second left.

Tessah Holt hit two big three throws and Anma Onyeuku, who had a monster game with 24 points, saved her biggest basket for the end of the game. She connected on a layup with five seconds left to make the final score 41-38.

“She was incredible tonight,” head coach John Strickland said about Onyeuku. “She has just been solid all season long.” Strickland was also pleased that his team matched Woodward’s intensity in the closing moments of the ball game.

Now, the Lady Tigers, the reigning region champions, are in the same position they were in last year. Tomorrow they will play for the 2-AAAA region title at 6 p.m. and, no matter the result, they will host a state playoff game next week.
