Fayette County Lady Tigers (23-5) vs. Bainbridge Lady Bearcats (18-8), Wednesday night, 7 p.m.

The Lady Tigers marched into the Sweet 16 of the Class AAAA tournament by defeating Forest Park 49-22. Sophomore Anma Onyeuku led Fayette County with 16 points and nine rebounds, while senior Kristene Walker added 15 points and junior Tessah Holt chipped in six points and seven assists.

Fayette’s opponent tonight, the Bainbridge Lady Bearcats, had a much tougher game. They outlasted Greenbrier 63-57 in overtime.
Six of Bainbridge’s eight losses came in the second half of the season and were by four points or less. They are averaging just over 50 points a game and are allowing 44.9 points per game.

The Lady Tigers have won seven games in a row. They are averaging over 53 points per game and are allowing just over 35 points per game. The Fayette County defense has been strong all year and will need another good showing to make the Elite Eight.

Sandy Creek Lady Patriots (22-5) @ Gainesville Lady Red Elephants (24-5), Wednesday night, 7 p.m.

Sandy Creek took on Stephens County in the opening round of the playoffs and won 63-47.

“We try to play good defense every night, and tonight we came out playing well from the start. Everybody got it done,” said Creek coach Leslie Cooper, who agreed that her team couldn’t have scripted a better opening round performance.

The girls were led by 16 points from Rich, who scored 12 points on 3-pointers, while Morgan Toles and Jaquaye Okai each scored 15 points.

Gainesville is on an eight-game winning streak. They defeated Southside 46-25 to reach the second round of the Class AAA playoffs. The Lady Red Elephants have only lost twice in 2008. Gainesville only has one senior on the squad, 5’11” power forward Abby Musselwhite, and three of their players are 6’ or taller.

The Lady Red Elephants are averaging over 53 points a game on offense, while allowing just over 40 on defense. Sandy Creek is allowing a little less per game (40.1 to Gainesville’s 40.8) but are also scoring a little less (51.2 to Gainesville’s 53.4).

Sandy Creek and Fayette County’s boys played their second round playoff games Tuesday night after the paper went to press. Sandy Creek played at Flowery Branch (25-3), while Fayette County played at Thomas County Central (22-5).
