Local wrestlers qualify for state tournaments

Fayette County won the team portion of the Area 2-AAAA wrestling championship, with Whitewater taking third place, McIntosh finishing in fourth place and Starr’s Mill taking sixth.

The Tigers had four wrestlers finish in first place: Ali Khan (103), Joel Carnow (112), Austin Vorwald (125) and Patrick Blankenbeker (189). Jonathan West (140) placed second and Sam Law (152) placed fourth. Other Fayette wrestlers who made state (full results for all weight classes in 2-AAAA could not be found) were Blake Axelberg (119), Dylan Tanner (145), Brian Tilton (171) and Matt Mulski (215).

Whitewater’s Kenny Kellerman (145), Chase Penland (160) and Jacob Williamson (171) all had first-place finishes, while teammates Luke Wilkinson (130), Jake Huddleston (140) and Hendri DeBeer (189) all placed third. Other Wildcats who qualified for the state tournament were Alex Kidd (103) Shane Morrow (112), Derek Morrow (119), Josh Burns (125), Nathan Nestor (135) and Ryan Nolan (215).

McIntosh’s Richard Hughes (130) and Matt Carroll (215) both had top finishes with teammates Jarrod Chamblee (112), Rickey Oskey (145), Erik Willanzheimer (189) and Sean Carney (285) all in second place. Carl Scheumann (152) placed third. Jacob Worthington (171) also made state.

Starr’s Mill’s Jason Allen (125) and Kevin O’Brien (152) placed second. Dell Ressl (103), Stephen Plante (119) and Chris Gordon (285) also qualified for the state meet.

Woodward Academy, which placed second in the tournament, had two wrestlers based in Fayette County who took first place in their respective weight classes: Tommy Carney (152) and Doug Taylor (140).

Sandy Creek placed second in the Area 6-AAA championship with 231 points. Derek Wojcik (152) placed first, while teammates Zach Smith (135), Alan Blackburn (140), Levon Alls (145), Julian Holmes (160) and Jesse Deyo (285) all placed second. Shelby Willis (215), Ricardo Fuentes (189), Stephen Hoffler (130), Brandon Beaver (125), Bradley Holmes (119), Anthony Taijron-John (112) and Greg Barrera (103) all placed third.

Wrestlers for Landmark Christian School who made the Class A state tournament are Ryan Thames (103), Chad Thames (125) and Josh Pollard (171). Our Lady of Mercy wrestlers who made the state tournament are: Clint Ford (112) and Patrick Silloway (285).

The state wrestling championships will take place at Gwinnett Arena. Class AAA will start with the round of 32 on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., while Class AAAA gets started at 8 a.m. on Thursday. Class A starts on Friday at 11:45 a.m. The consolation rounds last from 10:45 a.m.-4:15 p.m. and the finals last from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday.

a big CONGRATS to all our wrestlers! That's a great bunch of guys representing FCHS at State. Looking forward to you bringing home more titles.
