State volleyball playoffs start ThursdayThe Sandy Creek Lady Patriots defeated Whitewater in the championship game of the area 3-AAAA tournament on Saturday in three straight games (25-23, 25-19, 25-21). It was the second time in the tournament that Sandy Creek had defeated Whitewater. They also beat Starr's Mill in the tournament(25-20, 25-21). Sandy Creek softball moves on to Elite EightSandy Creek’s Lady Patriot softball team started their quest for a AAAA state title with a 7-0 win over North Springs and followed it up with a 5-2 win over Hillgrove. The team lost 1-0 to Northgate but bounced back with a 6-1 win over Madison County to put them in the Elite Eight. Whitewater softball moves on to Elite 8Whitewater’s varsity softball team, still ranked first in AAAA in the GaSports.com/GACA Coaches poll, went 3-0 to start the state tournament and make the Elite Eight. Mercy teams finish in top 5 of Wesleyan InvitationalOur Lady of Mercy’s boys placed third in the Wesleyan Invitational. Bobcats fall to Whitefield Academy, 55-12Our Lady of Mercy’s varsity football team knew they had a tough task ahead of them when they took on Whitefield Academy last Friday and the Wolfpack was every bit as strong as one thought, opening up a 41-0 lead by the half on their way to a 55-12 win. The Vikings struck in the first quarter with a 27 yard field goal from Casey Vaughan. In the second quarter, Northgate quarterback Jake Copeland connected with Malcolm Poindexter on a 60 yard touchdown play. Starr's Mill gets first win of season, tops Chiefs 31-3Starr's Mill took an early lead on McIntosh Friday night and never looked back. Trenton Edwards (four rushes for 52 yards) scored three of the Panthers' four touchdowns, while Stephen Roberts returned an interception for a touchdown. Chris Ward added a field goal for Starr's Mill. Vikings run wild: Northgate defeats Fayette 31-13The Northgate Vikings proved again Friday that it might be the most improved team in Region 5A-AAAA with their third consecutive victory, 31-13 over visiting Fayette County. Mercy football tops SACA, 35-8Our Lady of Mercy’s varsity football team got their first region win of the season last Friday by defeating Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy, 35-8. Landmark falls to Holy Innocents, 31-6The Landmark War Eagle offense couldn’t get off the ground in Friday night’s loss to Holy Innocents. The lone touchdown came from senior defensive back Blake Wyatt who returned an interception 74 yards for a touchdown. He had another interception later in the first half. Landmark got 66 yards rushing from Robert Waters and 58 yards rushing from Josh Gebhardt. Big play day: Whitewater defeats Starr's Mill 28-7Thomas Frierson had a night that was fit for a king Friday. Frierson ran 10 times for 154 yards and scored on runs of 44 and 94 yards, and his defensive teammates played their best game of the season in a 28-7 victory over the visiting Starr’s Mill Panthers in a Region 5A-AAAA game on Homecoming Night in Fayetteville. Patriots stay unbeaten, defeat Chiefs 34-7Sandy Creek came out fast against the McIntosh Chiefs, scoring 13 first quarter points with short touchdown runs from Derek Alexander and Alex Green. If their goal was to erase memories of last year’s loss at the hands of the Chiefs, mission accomplished. But McIntosh stayed close and made things interesting.
