State volleyball playoffs start Thursday

The Sandy Creek Lady Patriots defeated Whitewater in the championship game of the area 3-AAAA tournament on Saturday in three straight games (25-23, 25-19, 25-21). It was the second time in the tournament that Sandy Creek had defeated Whitewater. They also beat Starr's Mill in the tournament(25-20, 25-21).

Jennifer Dunn led the team with 30 kills, while Katie Davenport had 25 kills and Chanelle Smith had 24 kills and led the team with eight service aces and eight blocks. Cheri Smith led our trio of setters with 51 assists, while Samantha Bryan had 28 and Estefania Diaz had 12. Mallie Haumann had 34 digs, Jennifer Dunn had 29 and Katie Davenport, Cheri Smith and Chanelle Smith each had 10 digs.

Whitewater finished in the area runner-up position. They defeated Banneker on Thursday and defeated McIntosh twice on Saturday. They won the morning match (25-11,21-25, 25-20) and the afternoon match (25-23, 17-25, 25-14) as well.

“We’ll be ready for Sandy Creek should we see them in the finals,” said Coach Ben Thacker.

McIntosh will enter next week's state tournament as the third seed. The Lady Chiefs defeated Fayette County on Thursday and Northgate (25-18, 25-16) and Starr's Mill (25-18, 25-20).

Starr's Mill will be the fourth seed from the region in the state tournament. The Lady Panthers defeated Northgate on Thursday and Fayette County on Saturday (25-13, 25-6).

Sandy Creek (45-13) opens the state sectionals on Thursday at 1 p.m. against Forest Park (22-6). The winner of this match will take on the winner of Lakeside, Evans and Lee County at 5 p.m. Whitewater (42-12) opens their bid for a state title at home on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Jonesboro (35-15). The winner of this match will take on the winner of Lithia Springs and Forsyth Central at 2 p.m.

McIntosh (21-23) will open against Ola (35-15) at home on Saturday at 10 a.m. The winner of this match will meet the winner of Brunswick and Harlem at 2 p.m. Starr’s Mill (23-20) will start the state playoffs with a match against Dutchtown (27-17) at Whitewater Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. The winner of that match will meet the winner of Chamblee and Allatoona at 5 p.m.

East Coweta captured was the runner-up in the area 4-AAAAA championship. They will open the state playoffs at Chattahoochee on Thursday at 1 p.m. with a match against Savannah Arts. The winner of that match will take on the winner of Pope and Luella at 5 p.m.

Landmark Christian captured the area 3-AA/A championship and will start the state sectionals on Thursday at Holy Innocents at 1 p.m. with a match against Buford. The winner of this match will take on the winner of Savannah Country Day and Jordan at 5 p.m.

Our Lady of Mercy was the third seed from area 3-AA/A. They begin their state title quest at Wesleyan on Thursday with a 1 p.m. match against Decatur. The winner of this match will face the winner of Early County and Savannah Christian at 5 p.m.
