Teams warm up for area volleyball tournament with big games

Fayette County’s volleyball team went 2-3 over the weekend. They defeated Alcovy (25-10, 25-18) and Jackson County (25- 19, 25-15) but lost to Heritage, Conyers (25-21, 25-11), Rockdale County (25-15, 25-13), and Morgan County (25-22, 27-25).
The Lady Tigers will open the area tournament at 6 p.m. on Thursday with a game against McIntosh at Whitewater High School.

McIntosh lost to Whitewater (21-25, 25-22, 25-22) and Woodward Academy (25-18, 23-25, 25-20) last Tuesday. Katie Briggs had 29 kills in the two matches, while Betsy Kelsch had 58 assists, Catherine Lane had 32 digs and Shauna Robertson had five blocks.

Whitewater also lost to Woodward Academy (25-14, 25-22) last Tuesday. The Lady Wildcats bounced back with wins over Houston County (25-13, 25-19) and Union Grove (25-11, 25-18) on Wednesday. They will open the area tournament on Thursday with a home game against Banneker at 7 p.m.

Starr’s Mill closed out their regular season with losses to Landmark Christian (25-14, 25-15) and Marist (25-15, 25-23) last Thursday. They will open the area tournament at 5 p.m. on Thursday with a game against Northgate.

Sandy Creek lost to Wesleyan (25-12, 25-23) and Marist (27-25, 25-6) last Tuesday but defeated Kennesaw Mountain (25-23, 25-21) and Columbus (25-20, 25-19) on Saturday. They will play the winner of the Mays/Tri Cities game at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Whitewater in the area tournament.
