Her talented senior class, as a whole, turned in one of its best performances in perhaps 10th-ranked Creek’s most important game of the year, a 5-4 victory over top-ranked Whitewater in a Region 5A-AAAA game on Senior Night in Tyrone that sealed the No 1 seed in next week’s region tournament. East Coweta wins fourth straight, 10-0 over WestlakeOne of Westlake’s goals Friday against East Coweta was to prevent standout running back Tay Willis from scoring. The Lions kept Willis away from the end zone, but they couldn’t contain Jeric Woodall, who caught a touchdown pass and had an interception, to lead East Coweta to its fourth consecutive victory, 10-0 in Atlanta. Ezell-led East Coweta shuts out NewnanChristina Ezell received quite a scare during East Coweta’s practice Monday, taking a line drive off her face that broke a bone and knocked out one of her teeth. Fayette County Swimmers of the Year namedSwimming is a “life sport” that is enjoyed by over two million people of all ages and abilities. Birhanu ran a 2:23:12 to defeat his next closest competitor by over three minutes. His teammate on the Foot Solutions Elite Racing Team, Sergey Kaledin from Russia, was the Men’s Masters winner and fourth overall in a time of 2:32:40. These two elite racers will be toeing the line when the gun signals the start of the first of three races come Oct. 18. Numerous local teams run at Mill Run; Fayette County runs at MercerOur Lady of Mercy’s boys placed fifth in the varsity division of the Mill Run, follwed by Starr’s Mill in eighth and Whitewater in ninth. Lady 'Cats and Lady Pats play well in tournament; Starr's Mill rides winning streakWhitewater and Sandy Creek’s varsity softball teams played in the Brookwood tournament over the weekend. The Lady Wildcats, ranked first in Class AAAA, went 4-2. The tournament started with a 3-2 loss in five innings to Parkview, but Whitewater bounced back with wins over Collins Hill, ranked eighth in Class AAAAA, 3-2, Wesleyan, 6-0, Mill Creek, ranked second in Class AAAAA, 5-4 in eight innings and Apalachee, 7-2, before losing to Central, Carroll, ranked ninth in Class AAA, 4-2. Luella’s fourth-quarter flurry finishes off Fayette, 31-6.Through the first half of their game Friday, neither Fayette nor Luella was able to score. Fayette took the first lead of the game on a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jensen Floyd on the opening drive of the second half. Starr's Mill teams win varsity division of Sandy Creek Fall ClassicStarr’s Mill’s boys and girls won the varsity division of the Sandy Creek Fall Classic this past weekend. Sprayberry knocks off Starr's Mill 23-14Starr’s Mill is perhaps best known for its winning football program throughout the years. It has been a different type of season thus far for Starr’s Mill, which suffered its fourth consecutive loss Friday, 23-14 to host Sprayberry. Creek remains undefeated, clobbers Osborne 42-7Fourth-ranked Sandy Creek’s offense arguably features the largest collection of skill position talent in the area. The leader of Creek’s offense is quarterback Rio Johnson, who played a significant role in his team’s record-setting passing performance and 42-7 victory Friday over the host Osborne Cardinals. Whitewater loses another heartbreaker, 24-23 to CarrolltonThe last two weeks have been heartbreaking for the Whitewater Wildcats, who lost their second straight close game Friday, 24-23 to the Carrollton Trojans. McIntosh matches last season's win total, downs Northside, Columbus 24-7Freshman quarterback Brennan Morgan probably never could have imagined that he would make much of an impact in his first year of playing football at the high school level. Landmark runs to 47-13 win over MercyTanner Bryant got things started for Landmark Christian in their 47-13 win over Our Lady of Mercy with a 17 yard touchdown run. Andrew Glaize had three touchdown runs in the first half for the War Eagles who rolled to their third straight win. He finished with 185 yards on 19 carries, while Bryant chipped in 98 yards on 10 carries.
