Lady 'Cats and Lady Pats play well in tournament; Starr's Mill rides winning streakTue, 09/23/2008 - 2:44pm

Whitewater and Sandy Creek’s varsity softball teams played in the Brookwood tournament over the weekend. The Lady Wildcats, ranked first in Class AAAA, went 4-2. The tournament started with a 3-2 loss in five innings to Parkview, but Whitewater bounced back with wins over Collins Hill, ranked eighth in Class AAAAA, 3-2, Wesleyan, 6-0, Mill Creek, ranked second in Class AAAAA, 5-4 in eight innings and Apalachee, 7-2, before losing to Central, Carroll, ranked ninth in Class AAA, 4-2. Haley Richards, who hit a walkoff home run against Collins Hill, hit .500 for the weekend with a double, two triples, two walks, one RBI, eight runs and one stolen base.; Jamie Saunders hit .500 for the weekend with three doubles, two walks, six RBI and one stolen base; and Lauren Williamon hit .429 with two RBI for Whitewater. Pitcher Whitney Toler recorded all three victories for Whitewater. She struck out 16, walked eight and had a 1.64 ERA. Whitewater (20-5) will play at Starr’s Mill today and will play at Sandy Creek next Thursday at 6 p.m. to close out the regular season. Sandy Creek had their 11-game winning streak snapped in the Brookwood tournament on Saturday with a loss to Loganville, ranked second in Class AAAA, 4-0. Prior to the loss, Sandy Creek got wins last week over Dacula (5-3), Peachtree Ridge, ranked ninth in Class AAAAA, 4-2, Mays (9-1) and Houston County, ranked fourth in Class AAAAA, 5-1. After the loss to Loganville, the Lady Patriots defeated Creekview, ranked sixth in Class AAA, 5-4, before losing to Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, the top ranked team in Class A, 8-2. In the Houston County win. Hannah Braswell pitched a one-hitter. Candace Dunn was 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, while Meagan Sitton scored two runs with a stolen base. In the Creekview win, Sitton had an RBI double, while Dunn and Kayla Awbrey each chipped in two hits. Raven Moore and Morgan Toles each had stolen bases in the win. Toles had two more stolen bases in the loss to Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, while Mackenzie Arlt got on base all three times she was up to bat. Sandy Creek (19-6-1) will host McIntosh tomorrow at 6 p.m. Starr’s Mill’s Lady Panthers are riding a four game winning streak. They defeated Tri-Cities 17-1 last Wednesday and defeated North Atlanta 14-2 on Friday. McIntosh (3-12) took on Alexander on the road yesterday after the paper went to press. Fayette County hosted Villa Rica yesterday after the paper went to press and will play at Lithia Springs next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. login to post comments |
