Online exclusive: week two football previewFayette County Tigers (0-1) vs. Houston County Bears (1-0), Friday, 7:30 p.m. Coming off their first loss since 2006, Fayette faces a Houston County squad that crushed Groves 41-0 in its season opener last week. It was a sign of progress for Houston County, which won only one game last season. But Fayette should pose a stiffer challenge this week for Houston County, which is under the direction of a new head coach, Greg Robinson. Fayette features one of the top running backs in the area in Tim Pettaway and a defense that has seven returning starters, including active linebacker Evan Reid. Fayette drops season opener to Stockbridge, 27-14An undefeated regular season will not be happening for the Fayette County Tigers this year. Stockbridge scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to defeat visiting Fayette County 27-14 Friday in the teams’ season opener. Whitewater handles Douglas County, 42-17Although Douglas County led Whitewater 17-15 at the half, the Wildcats put forth a tremendous second half effort that produced 27 more points on offense and refused to allow another point from a potent Douglas County team to win their season opener 42-17 Friday in Fayetteville. Landmark falls to Brookstone 34-14The Landmark Christian School War Eagles started sophomore Carson Barnett at quarterback in the season’s first game and the opening exchange did not go well. The play resulted in a fumble and Brookstone capitalized, running back the fumble for a touchdown. Overtime thriller: Sandy Creek defeats East Coweta 24-17There is an old adage that big-time players make big plays when their teams need them most. That was the case Friday for the Sandy Creek Patriots, who relied on five upperclassmen to make game-changing plays in a 24-17 overtime victory over the East Coweta Indians in the teams' season-opening non-region game at The Battlefield in Tyrone. Etowah crushes Starr's Mill at the Dome, 47-24The Boykin surname is one that has haunted the Starr’s Mill Panthers in the past. Brandon Boykin, a former standout quarterback/cornerback at Fayette County who is now playing at Georgia, helped lead his team to a 28-14 victory over Starr’s Mill last season. Sandy Creek defeats Salem 14-7 in scrimmageIt was only a scrimmage, but the Sandy Creek Patriots looked impressive Friday, defeating the Salem Seminoles 14-7 at The Battlefield in Tyrone. Sitton, Dunn and Folds lead Sandy Creek past Starr's Mill, 9-1With the way Sandy Creek hit and Kayla Folds pitched Thursday, the Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers didn’t have much of a chance. Whitewater, Sandy Creek shine in Up the Creek TournamentThe Up the Creek Tournament was held over the weekend at McCurry Park in Fayetteville, and three local teams finished among the top three finishers in the Diamond Division: Whitewater took second place, and Sandy Creek finished third. Whitewater stands out at Sequoyah TournamentThe Whitewater Wildcats turned in an impressive showing at the Sequoyah Classic Saturday, finishing in third place with a 5-2 record. Whitewater cheerleaders receive prestigious honorOf the 411 high schools in Georgia, there are an estimated 2,000 senior cheerleaders in the state. Hundreds of these were nominated last summer by their coaches because of their exemplary cheerleading skills. Of those nominated, 40 athletes were selected by review of application and recommendations, to try-out spot on the prestigious Top 16 in the State. Whitewater High School’s cheerleading coaches Kelly Stanford and Kelly Garner nominated five young ladies who met a minimum requirement of a 3.85 GPA along with exceptional leadership and cheerleading skills. All five of the nominees completed the application process, made the top 40, and also made the Top 16. No other school in the program’s history has ever had such a strong representation. Starr's Mill loses to East Coweta in scrimmage, 22-13If their scrimmage Thursday against East Coweta is any indication, the Starr’s Mill Panthers still have a considerable amount of work to do before their season opener against Etowah next Saturday at the Georgia Dome. Fraker survives early penalty in first round, finishes sixth overallBenn Fraker (Peachtree City, Georgia) shook off an early penalty in his first run to come back with a faster and totally clean run to finish 10th in C-1 yesterday and continue his quest for an Olympic medal. Wojcik wins silver at Junior OlympicsDerek Wojcik, 16, completed one of the best summers any competitor could ask for. Wojcik, first won the 2008 National Kyu tournament held in San Francisco, Calif. going 5-0 all by Ippon (instant win) in the sport of Judo. Next, Wojcik took silver at the U.S open in which over 30 countries represented the world in the sport of Judo. Over the weekend of July 25-26, Wojcik took his assault to Orlando, Fla. to compete at the Junior Olympics. He fell just short of his goal of gold as he reeled off four wins but lost in the finals.
