Golfer Taylor Huse

Taylor Huse has only been playing competitive golf for the past two years, but his rapid improvement and strong showings against some outstanding opponents over the past year was all the proof Lee University golf coach John Maupin needed to offer Huse a spot on the 2008-09 golf team.

Huse, who was home schooled, has been deeply involved in the Southeastern and Atlanta junior golf tours over the past two years. He placed second in the Meadow Links tournament and has been listed in the top 10 in several others.

“I believe the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour is the second strongest in this part of the country,” said Maupin, who will be his first season as the men and women’s golf coach at Lee this fall. “I feel real good about this signing. Taylor has a lot of potential. He’s been up against solid competition and he does extremely well in the classroom.”

Maupin added, “When I look at his scores on the Southeastern Tour I was impressed. I believe he’s a great fit for Lee. We expect out of him and believe he’ll develop into one of our program’s leaders.”

Huse, who also looked at Clayton State (Ga.), is from Peachtree City, Ga. “My dad (Bill) taught me how to play the game and I’ve played for fun almost my entire life. When I got serious about the game I connected with my golf coach, Jim Goergen. He helped me develop my swing and it is exactly what I’ve been looking for.”

The new Lee signee said he would continue to work hard and be able to turn in more scores that were under par. “I also want to help make the team better.”

Huse said he selected Lee because of the Christian environment and the golf program. “My cousin, Katie Thornton, played volleyball for four years at Lee. She loved it and she’s already helped me select a dorm room and advised me on what to bring from home for my first year at Lee.”

The latest of five freshmen recruits will pursue a double major in business management and accounting.

Maupin said his first Lee club would begin practice and qualifying for tournaments the first week of classes. “We will also introduce our team to something new this fall. We’re going to have plenty of conditioning work.”
