Whitewater, Sandy Creek shine in Up the Creek TournamentTue, 08/19/2008 - 2:38pm

The Up the Creek Tournament was held over the weekend at McCurry Park in Fayetteville, and three local teams finished among the top three finishers in the Diamond Division: Whitewater took second place, and Sandy Creek finished third. East Coweta went 6-0 to win the Diamond Division. Starr’s Mill took third in the Gold Division, and McIntosh finished third in the Ruby Division. Whitewater went 5-1, defeating Chapel Hill 8-1, Lowndes 5-0, Newnan 9-0, Northside Warner Robins 2-0 and Sandy Creek 5-3. It lost to East Coweta 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning of the championship game. Seven girls hit over .300 for Whitewater in the tournament, including McKenzie Woody (.632, three RBI, seven runs scored, eight stolen bases) and Kaitlyn Johnson (.474, five RBI, one home run and four runs scored). Whitewater also received stellar pitching from Whitney Toler, who went 3-1 with a .32 ERA and 28 strikeouts, and Kristy Cook, who went 2-0 with a .54 ERA and five strikeouts. Sandy Creek went 4-2 in the tournament, defeating Pike County 4-0, Jones County 3-1, McIntosh 12-0 and Dutchtown 12-0. Its losses came against East Coweta (2-1) in eight innings and Whitewater (5-3). Meagan Sitton, MacKenzie Arlt, Kayla Awbry and Andrea Dalton each had hits for Creek against Pike County. Hannah Braswell pitched a five-hit, 11-strikeout shutout against Pike. Sitton (3-4), Candance Dunn (1-2) and Kayla Awbry (1-3) were Creek’s top hitters against Jones County. Dunn also had two stolen bases. Kayla Folds struck out 10 and allowed five hits and one run to record the victory. In Creek’s game against Whitewater, Awbry hit an inside-the-park home run. Starr’s Mill went 2-3, defeating Stockbridge 7-0 and North Cobb 15-2. It lost to Tift County 7-1, Pike County 6-2 and Lowndes 8-1. McIntosh went 0-5, losing 6-1 to Jones County, 5-4 to Dutchtown, 12-0 to Sandy Creek, 14-3 to Pike County and 9-8 to Stockbridge. login to post comments |
