Mayor proclaims DeMolay Week in Peachtree CityAt the monthly meeting of the Peachtree City Council on March 1, Mayor Harold Logsdon proclamed the week of March 18-24, 2007 DeMolay Week in Peachtree City. March 18 is the anniversary of the official founding of DeMolay in 1919 and DeMolay International is celebrating its 88th anniversary in 2007. Leoffler to attend renowned summer dance programEighth grader Kimberly Leoffler had been accepted in to the Rock Summer Dance Intensive in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Notables• Joseph Anthony Piasta of Tyrone has been named to the dean's list at Wake Forest University for the fall 2006 semester. Students who achieve a 3.0 or higher grade point average were named to the list. He is the son of John and Monica Piasta and a 2003 graduate of McIntosh High School. Best selling author, teacher speaks to RotaryPeachtree City Rotary hosted teacher and speaker Ron Clark at their February 22 meeting. Clark, who was chosen as Disney's American Teacher Of The Year in 2000 for his work in rural North Carlina and inner city Harlem, New York, spoke to a crowded room of Rotarians and guests. In addition to working with children in the classroom, Clark is the New York Times Best Selling author for his book, "The Essential 55." His book focuses on the 55 rules which he uses as a teaching tool for his students. Girl Scouts get trainedMembers of Girl Scout Troop 279 in Peachtree City attended Program Aide training in January. Program Aides are trained to work with younger Girl Scouts in areas such as songs, games, ceremonies, and camping. The dean's list recognizes full-time students who have maintained a grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Preininger is the daughter of Frank and Gabriela Preininger of Peachtree City, Ga. and a 2005 honor graduate of Starr's Mill High School. Local celebrityMcIntosh freshman makes first foray into film acting An interest in filmmaking technology led to a supporting role in the independent film "Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield" for 15 year old Tori Valencia, a life-long Fayette County resident. Last summer when Valencia, a McIntosh High School freshman, expressed her interest in digital filmmaking to director Michael Feifer of Feifer Productions, she had no idea that he would end up casting her in his latest movie, which is based on the true story of the life of Ed Gein, the serial killer who lived in Plainfield, Wisconsin in the late ‘50s. Valencia not only plays the part of a local towns-girl in the film, but she gained firsthand knowledge of the new technology of digital movie production. “Digital mediums are used now instead of film or tape, but people still say they are 'filming' or might say 'rolling,'" Valencia stated. The day will be dedicated to teaching people all about pets and has been arranged by Jessica Lasseter as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award Project. The scheduled activities will include demonstrations on different kinds of pets, dog training, animal grooming, veterinary care and a visit from an adoption team. Area businesses will be represented and learning stations will be set up with speakers on various topics. Admission is $4 per person plus a donation of a canned dog or cat food item to benefit the Fayette County Animal Shelter. Griffin Technical College announces 2007 GOAL nomineesGriffin Technical College recently announced the nomination of 36 students for the 2007 Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) at a reception held Feb. 12. WWII Heritage Days set for AprilExperience the sights and sounds of World War II when the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Dixie Wing hosts the fourth annual WWII Heritage Days April 14-15. Dicke earns Eagle Scout rankZach Dicke received his Eagle Scout badge recently. He is a member of Troop 309, sponsored by The American Legion Fayette County Post 105. Dicke has earned a total of 41 merit badges, is a member of the Order of the Arrow, Scouting's National Honor Society, and has been to the Philmont Scout Ranch. While a Cub Scout in Pack 75, he earned the Arrow of Light award. He demonstrated his leadership skills during his Eagle Scout project, a renovation in the neighborhood clubhouse for the Estates. ABWA announces scholarshipThe McIntosh Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) is funding a special scholarship through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund (SBMEF). The field of study is not specified and the scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $2,000. |
