Sanders earns Eagle rankOn Sunday, February 4, Boy Scout Troop 175 celebrated the pinning of its 94th Eagle Scout in a Court of Honor Ceremony for Steven Sanders. Sanders joined Scouting in first grade as a Tiger Cub and progressed through the organization to its highest rank, that of Eagle Scout. Auction to raise funds for Promise PlacePromise Place, formerly the Fayette County Council on Domestic Violence, will sponsor an ARTcetra Live and Silent Auction on Saturday April 14, at the Tyrone Depot on 847 Senoia Road in Tyrone, Ga. The preview begins at 6:30 p.m. and the auction starts at 7:30 p.m. Rotary donates to Christian CityAt their weekly meeting at the Wyndham Conference Center in Peachtree City, the Rotary Club of Peachtree City recently presented Christian City a gift of $1,000. The donation is in support of the new Children's Village project which is under construction on Christian City's campus in Union City. The Children's Village will be comprised of eight to ten new cottages for the abandoned or neglected children that are in Christian City's care. Administrative offices and recreational facilities are also planned. Murray attends LeadAmerica’s National Junior Leaders ConferenceTayler A. Murray, a student at Fayette Middle School, was selected to attend the 2007 National Junior Leaders Conference, sponsored by LeadAmerica, at John Hopkins University in Washington, D.C. The NJLC is a leadership program for promising young leaders from across the United States and internationally. Middle and junior high school students with a record of academic achievement and extracurricular or community involvement, are invited to participate. Toastmasters take top honorsTwo members of the Peachtree City Toastmasters Club won the Division A competition recently. Spring Hill celebrates book revealTwo Spring Hill Elementary first grade classes recently celebrated the unveiling of their published class books. Renee McIver and Valerie Young’s students have been busy writing stories about penguins. Each student wrote a story and drew an illustration to accompany their narrative. GFRW members participate in fund raiserLong time member of the Georgia Federation of Republican Women, Ora Jean Gunnin is pictured with Angela Bean, the group’s most recent member, at a recent fund raising event for the Fayette chapter. Gunnin has been a member of GFRW for 43 years, eight in Fayette County and 37 in Fulton. She currently serves as the treasurer of the South Fulton chapter as well as chaplin of the Fayette Women's Group. She is on the Executive Committee of the Fayette County Party and on the State Committee of the Georgia Republican Party. Gentile advances to state round of Word Power ChallengeMichael Gentile, a sixth grade student at J.C. Booth Middle School, advanced to the state championship round of the Reader’s Digest National Word Power Challenge held March 19 at Middle Georgia Technical College in Warner Robbins. As one of the top 100 scoring sixth, seventh and eighth graders in the state, Gentile competed in the state championship, answering 21 out of 25 questions correctly. Grenier takes first placeK-Kids at Sara Harp Minter Elementary School conducted an art contest which was sponsored by the Fayette Kiwanis Club and Wal-Mart at the Fayette Pavilion. Shown winning first place is Remington Grenier, a fifth grader, who was awarded $50 from Fayette Kiwanis which was presented to her by Reid Spearman. Sara Harp Minter's Art Department received a $250 gift from Wal-Mart and was presented by Teresa Thaxton. Notables• Air Force Airman Ryan C. Williams has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. He is the son of Doug Williams of Fayetteville, Ga. and a 2006 graduate of Sandy Creek High School, Tyrone, Ga. Sandy Creek graduate running for a good cause in CharlestonThis Saturday, Marine Staff Sgt. Mike Harris, a former resident of Fayetteville, Ga., will participate in a 10K run fund-raiser. Harris, who graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1997, will participate in the 30th annual Cooper River Bridge Run 10K in Charleston, South Carolina on March 31. The event will raise funds for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund (IMSFF), a non-profit organization closely associated with the Marine Corp, which provides assistance for injured Marines and Sailors. Hervey raises funds for Project Smile as part of Eagle Scout projectMcIntosh High School student Michael Hervey, 15, from Peachtree City is curently working to raise $10,000 for an organization called Operation Smile as part of his Eagle Scout project. Operation Smile is a private, not-for-profit volunteer medical services organization that provides reconstructive surgery and related health care to indigent children and young adults in developing countries and the United States. Governor Perdue honors 9-1-1 professionals, young heroesOn March 8, Governor Sonny Perdue proclaimed 9-1-1 Day in Georgia, honoring 9-1-1 professionals and 15 young 9-1-1 heroes from around the state at a ceremony at the State Capitol. The annual ceremony recognizes the dedication and commitment of approximately 2,500 professionals who operate local and regional 9-1-1 centers throughout Georgia. Compton headed to leadership conferenceElliot Compton of Peachtree City will represent Our Lady of Victory Catholic School in Washington D.C. at the Conference for the Junior Congressional Youth Leadership Council from March 31 to April 5, 2007. Compton earned his nomination by demonstrating exceptional scholastic merit and leadership potential. Cub Scouts "Go See It"On Friday, Feb. 23, Tiger Cub Scout Den #2, of Pack 212 took two "Go See It" local tours. Locally based radio station, J93.3, showed the Scouts around the radio station. Fayette Christian students place at state competitionNearly 1,300 students from member schools of the Georgia Association of Christian Schools (GACS) participated in the annual state academic, Bible, and fine arts competition which culminated on March 12 and 13 at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Ga. Competition was conducted in numerous categories including vocal and instrumental music, speech, science projects, art, spelling, Bible memory and quizzing, and many areas of academic testing. Bryce Towle named top Junior Handler for 2006Bryce Towle was recently announced as the AKC 2006 number one Junior Handler in the country for Curly-Coated Retreivers. Towle and his dog DownDaTrail It’s My Fantasy, better known as “Fancy,” competed in AKC dog shows throughout the year. They showed against other kids ages 9-18 years old. The kids are judged on the way they handle, present and show their dogs. Many long hours of practice and preparation go into this sport, as well as traveling to out of state competitions. Rising Starr Symphonic Band makes musical historyRising Starr Middle Symphonic Band director Steve Tyndall, along with 72 of the RSM Symphonic Band’s musicians, recently learned just how it feels to go down in the history books when they became one of the first two middle school bands selected to perform at the Bands of America (BOA) National Concert Band Festival March 15-17 in Indianapolis. Lynde takes top prize at oratorical contestMembers of The American Legion Fayette County Post 105 are shown with the winner of their 2007 Oratorical Contest, Diana Lynde of Fayetteville. The American Legion oratorical contest is a patriotic public speaking competition that helps high school students develop a deeper understanding of the Constitution of the United States and their duties as a citizen. Cribs awarded to first graduating class from PRC programThe Pregnancy Resource Center has launched a program to provide new cribs to women who do not have cribs for their babies. Six cribs were awarded to clients who qualified by completing a video series on parenting or marriage. In addition, this program is so successful that it has become necessary to form an ongoing class. The class meets on Wednesday mornings and is taught by Janet Harrelson, one of our volunteers. |
