Club Z! Tutoring announces 2007 essay contest winnersClub Z! Tutoring of Fayette County has announced the winners of the 2007 essay contest, a competition that was open to all 10th and 11th graders living in Fayette County. Students were allowed to pick from three topics and were given a rubric to follow. This was the first year for the contest, and the locally owned Club Z! assembled a panel of accomplished writers, teachers, and editors to evaluate the essays and award the prize packages worth over $2,300 to winners. Each student was also automatically entered to win cash prizes from the Club Z! National Achievement Awards contest, with prizes valued at over $5,000. Fayette County 4-H students take honorsIn a study of adults conducted to find out what their greatest fears were, speaking before a group was rated number one. On April 14, 32 Fayette County fifth and sixth grade 4-H’ers mastered that skill at District Project Achievement and 22 came back as winners. “They’re all really winners,” said Lauren Mosher, Fayette County 4-H coordinator. “It took a lot of work and practice for each young person to prepare for this event.” Girls on the Run learn life lessonsFayette County’s first team of Girls on the Run (GOTR) have completed their 12 week program. The 12-week character building program of experiential learning through running teaches very specific and well-defined social and personal skills. Fayette County’s Timberlake team joined other metro-Atlanta GOTR teams in a non-competitive 5K race event, Sprint for Cancer, at Atlantic Station on Sunday, April 29. Daniel has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises. He is the son of Arthur Daniel of Fayetteville, Ga., and Valeria Shaw of McDonough, Ga. Daniel is a 2003 graduate of the Youth Challenge Academy, Savannah, Ga. Dorsey earns Eagle Scout rankEdward Dorsey Jr., having completed the requirements for and having been examined by an Eagle Scout Board, was found worthy of the rank of Eagle Scout. In honor of his achievement, an Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held on March 3, at Fayetteville First United Methodist Church. For his Eagle project, Dorsey installed drywall in the Youth Center at Flat Rock A.M. E. Church in Fayetteville. Math wizLuke Nagy, a fourth grade student at Braelinn Elementary, placed first in his school, county, state and nation in the Math Fax competition out of 2,915 students participating in Math 4. He was recognized at the FCBOE meeting on April 16 for his achievements. Turk earns Eagle Scout rankDavid Turk, of Peachtree City, Ga., received his Eagle Scout award on December 12, 2006. Turk is a member of Boy Scout troop 309. For his Eagle service project, Turk built three garden benches for the Bedford School in Fairburn, Ga. Turk is the son of Chris and Tammy Turk and recent graduate of Starr’s Mill High School where he was a member of the advanced orchestra, the academic team, the science olympiad team, the economics team, National Honor Society and Beta Club.
